Is this a tradition?

by marielexoteria

I saw a parade last Saturday and I was wondering if that's a tradition or if there's any cultural significance as to why the men were wearing those costumes and had their face and hands painted.

You can see the tip I wrote about it here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1f9e27/ (alternatively on my Brussels page, local customs).

Sorry for the self promotion, it was unintentional but I wanna be able to write a little more about it.

TIA

TIA, I don't know the answer to your question but it seems as if it's for Manneken-Pis. This Folk Hero of Brussels is always getting costumes for various reasons, something like 800 changes he has. The parade could have been for one of those events?

Re: Is this a tradition?

Possibly, as far as we know there wasn't anything scheduled and since Manneken Pis had a similar costume...

By the way: TIA = thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for your answer :)

LOL!! Sorry Mariel!! Guess I'm a bit behind on this type of shorthand.

Well, I found this on a search, but couldn't find the exact text of it. Also, there was something about a Guinesse parade, but that didn't seem to fit.

"On Saturday 13 March 2010, from 9 am till noon, Manneken-Pis receives the ... the Zombie Parade that is part of the Brussels International Fantastic Film ...
www.brussels.be/artdet.cfm?id=4004"

Is that the Saturday that you saw it?

Travel Tips for Brussels

Walk around the Grand Place, munching on a fresh Belgian waffle that was spread with chocolate. Walking around the Grand Place one evening in early December, when the annual Christmas Market was set up inside the courtyard. There was a bit of snow falling, all of the ancient buildings were lit beautifully, and the air smelled of pine boughs/hot cider/fresh waffles. Perfect!

Driving on the Brussels racing track

by Bendokan

Belgian drivers are decent drivers except in Brussels.
Once you get to Brussels everyone drives too fast and drives like a maniac. People will switch lanes without looking at you. So watch in front of you to avoid hitting other cars. There are lots of tunnels in Brussels and they are narrow and have some dangerous curves at high speeds. Check the stoplights.

Parking in Brussels : if you have a nice car, park in closed and paying parking lots. On the streets many people park their cars hitting the car in front and the car behind.

Enjoy your driving in Brussels... Taking a taxi in Brussels is the worst experience ever. They (cab drivers) think they own the roads and don't mind crashing.
Honk for fun !

Atomium and Mini-Europe

by chancay

during our 7 days Denmark-Norway-Germany-Belgium-Netherlands tour we finally stayed the longest time in Brussels...why? because of the long way out by subway to the Atomium :-) and because of Mini Europe we didn´t plan to visit but found it worth it after having a nice view down on it from the Atomium. That is why we didn´t leave Brussels the same day to go to Brugge or Amsterdam but stayed a night more....but we had a nice evening strolling around the city and cooking at our aunts appartment.

see the Japanese Tower.
The Japanese Tower (80 meters high), and the Chinese Pavilion are real jewels from oriental art.
They are originating from the international exhibition in Paris in 1900, and were rebuilt under rule of King Leopold II.

LA LUNETTE (Spectacles)

by LysDor

This nice estaminet is located just next to the Opéra De La Monnaie (see picture above) and along the shopping street Rue Neuve.

The Belgian revolution of 1830 started in this square "Place de la Monnaie", when opera-goers were inflamed with patriotic fervour.

It has been renovated since and has mirrors and wooden panels creating a pleasant place to sit and read history books or watch the world go by.

Watch out, however, if you order a *lunette* of beer - it's a LITRE (= 3 X 33cl of a beer of your choice) served in champagne-"coupe" glass and requires some careful thinking of how to drink its content before starting, lol!!
