Right in the Center

We stayed for two days in Banja Luka at the Hotel Palas. It was clean, the room was small but renovated, and the staff very helpful. Breakfast was nice - bread & jams, or they will make you eggs/omelet. We had dinner in the restaurant, but it was nothing special.

Unique Quality: They have a parking "garage", and also massage and physical therapy services. They accept Mastercard !!

Travel Options - Zagreb to Banja Luka

by rizauk

Hi,
I am coming back to Banja Luka in April (I can't wait!! Nectar pivo!?!?!?!) and I am flying into Zagreb. What is the best way to get there? I am told bus but I see there is also a post saying that the train is a good option.
Can someone give me the names of the bus and train companies and approximate timings???
Many Thanks,
Tony

Train times are on www.bahn.de (two trains daily, 4-4.5 hours, but one arrives in the middle of the night). Bus times and company names are on www.akz.hr (about 8 daily, some but not all are faster than the train).

Banja Luka is in the Republic of Serbska within Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is no visible border - but the road signs suddenly become cyrillic. And the graffiti.
From what I saw of it it seems prosperous and undamaged.
For instance, I saw a United Colours of Bennetton shop in a charming winding street of shops - and that franchise doesn't open shops where they don't confidently expect sales.
The sunshine was warm, the air, like everywhere in B & H, was crisp and clean.
The meal I had in a wonderful restaurant under the walls of the old castle? fort? - was truly excellent. And the wine. I'm not sure if it was expensive - I was being paid for - but it was really tasty. And the wait staff were most pleasant.
We left at midnight and the city streets were relatively quiet - but it seemed very safe. Just enough traffic around so you didn't get the wind up - but no drunken gangs of youths, or seedy looking characters lurking about.
The whole town was very very clean and spruce.

The Ottoman's palace

by croisbeauty

As far as I know this is the only remaining palace from the Otoman's period of Banja Luka. It is situated in the heart of the city, on the bank of the river Vrbas and opposite to the Kastel. Unfortunately, the palace is in a very bad conditions now.

Kastel

by croisbeauty

Kastel (the castle) is situated in the heart of Banja Luka, built in roman times first(Castellum), it was later fortified by the Ottomans during their occupation of the town and Bosnia aswell. It is the main attraction of the city and its oldest historic sight.

The Orthodox church

by croisbeauty

When visiting town of Banja Luka, the orthodox church of Svete Trojice is a must see. It is situated in the middle of the town's park, just a foot from the bank of the river Vrbas. Architectualy, it reminds alot on Serbian monasteries, such as Ravanica, Manasija etc.

The Orthodox church

See the main entrance into the church of St. Ciril and Method. The bell-tower stands next to the church but it is connected to it by the kind of arch. The whole complex is beautifuly coloured by red and yellow stripes and it makes is very attractive.
