Travel Tips for Sarajevo

You must see acctually...

by Tayra2

You must see acctually everything of Sarajevo, but I would prefear to visit first old town. There is lot of little shops with hand maded things. They are mostly selected in small streets by art. For example in one street are only gold shops, in another hand maded souvenirs, etc. In the center of city is a street called Ferhadija street. From the begining of that street are buildings in Austrian stile and on the end of the street start old town with houses and shops build in Turkey stile. We like to say that is the point where the West meet East. Bosnia and Sarajevo in Bosnia, that is just one dot on the planet.
That is a little point wherein the areas meet, terminate or begin the three amoung four-key components of the oldest and the most lasting division of the world: Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Islam. In addition, Judaism is also present here; the 'salt' of the world history by which the Bosnian bread has also been spiced in the last five centuries... ( this part I tuk from Sarajevo tourist guide, hope nobody will be mad, I really liked it and want to share with all of you)

In Sarajevo you can see lot of beautiful buildings and places which were really damaged during war time. Lot of them are now rebuild. After you visit Sarajevo, maybe you will forget some day what you have seen there, but one thing you will never forget: Multicultural life, all religions living together, even we had horiblle 4 years long war. Such things are posiblle only in Sarajevo. Because sarajevo are not buildings, restaurants, stores, etc. SARAJEVO ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING THERE:

Chess in front of the church

by Veroali

Playing chess is very popular in Sarajevo. Whenever i walked around, morning/evening, there were a lot of people, especially old men, playing. It is a lovely custom.
The chess are played in front of the Orthodox church in Trg Oblodenja, but also in front of BBI (shopping center) on the street Marsala Tita near Ali Pashina mosque.

taxi station and its fountain at Bascarsija

by picek

The fountain by the taxi station behind tram and bus stop at Bascarsija is great place to sit down and watch the activities. Every second something happens - like someone picking taxi, people taking buses and trams, people indulging in conversations and laughter, taxi drivers joking with themselves and people sitting and waiting. Nothing special, eh? However, I like this place, the water invites many to drink and refresh at the fountain and in the evening and middle of night it doesn't get deserted either. Nearby shops remain open, man brings beer and snack, taxi driver or a local - or visitor, they all seem to be curious of other birds of night, water still refresh tired face.
Nice place to relax and to meet other people when rest are sleeping or in bars.

Jewish graveyard

by DPando

This pleasant landscape was taken from the jewish graveyard.. an old one and our guide talked us about be carefull with possiblem land mines between graves.. an spectacular view of the two ends of Sarajevo could be seen from here.. on the left the mountains taken in one day by serbian troops who kept the road where supplies had to arrive from other places of Bosnia in order to safe local people sieged by the enemy

Igman - hiking/walking

by BHgirl

The opportunities for hiking and walking in the well-preserved nature of Igman are extensive.
People can make trips that will comply with their interests and physical shape - trips for "recreational" and "advanced" hikers, but also trips suitable for families with children.

What to Bring: Hiking Boots or sturdy walking shoes, small day-pack, 1 litre of water, rain gear, fleece, hat, sunscreen and camera
