Hostel Posillipo: Great location!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at Hostel Posillipo in Sarajevo for two nights. It was nothing fancy but alright, not really a hostel-like atmosphere, more like a private pension. We never met any other travellers here, only the friendly owner who was out smoking all the time when he was at home. One night he wasn't home so his son replaced him. Both wanted to buy our car which was parked right in front of the "reception". ;)

We slept in a private double room with comfortable beds and enough space. The bathroom was shared and it could have needed some cleaning but I have seen worse hostel bathrooms in my life! Make sure to bring your own toilet paper as there never was any available.

The location of the hostel is great - after a walk of maybe 1 minute you are at the famous fountain on Bašcaršija square. Very convenient. A tram stop is also almost in front of the door.

Talking of "in front of the door": The hostel is located in a backyard street called Besarina Cikma. The building in front of it, at the main street (Mula Mustafe Baseskije), was hit by a shell in the war and has no wall on the back. This unfortunately seems to attract some creepy fellows, I saw quite a few people who either used it as a toilet or as a place to stay. A bit dodgy unfortunately...

But apart from that it's ok here and the price is ok when compared to hotel prices in Sarajevo! We paid approx. 60 km per night for the room (30 EUR).

KONAK: Cheap , not so clean but ok and in the centre
  • Tip Rating:

  • Hostel Konak is located in Bascarsija in the old part of Sarajevo. They offer 24 beds in 9 rooms including a mixture of one and two bed rooms at very reasonable prices.

Their staff can help you in every way, through their knowledge of English, German, Poland and Russian.
VERY NICE AND FRIENDLY OWNER who took my dad and I for coffee in the morning and arranged parking - verrrrrry kind!!!

Tax is included in the price and they offer some good discounts for students with cards.

The bus and train stations are about 4 kilometres away from the hostel. The airport is 15 kilometre away.

BUT THEY ARE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY CENTRE!

    Hostel Ljubicica: Centrally located hostel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It is a hostel, do not expect luxury. There are dorms with 8 beds at a cost of 10 Euro per night. Two bathrooms and a kitchen with everything you need. People tend to loose the keys / not return them, thus there are not enough. Two girls who returned late, were locked out and woke up all uf us by knocking at the door :-( Also, it seems like people use toilet paper like crazy, it is often empty.

The first evening we did not have water. Not the hostel`s fault, the water line was broken. Gave us a chance to feel what it was like here during the long siege!

The hostel can also provide rooms in private homes at a higher cost: 15 Euro!

Staff is very friendly and helpful.

The best two things are: The price and the localisation.

The main picture shows a tram at the station, Hostel Ljubicica reception left of the train. The entrance of the hostel itself is where the car is parked, between the receprion and the tram.

URLs I found interesting: Other places to stay
  • Tip Rating:
  • I investigated the accommodation scene in Sarajevo quite intensely as I found it quite hard to find a nice place to stay at a decent price. As we were travelling on a limited budget we decided to stay in a simple hostel.

I have kept of the interesting URLs for you though because they might help you if you plan a stay in Sarajevo with a slightly bigger wallet. The first two choices were my favourites:

    Pension Halvat
    Hotel Michele
    Holiday Inn Hotel
    Hotel Saraj

The hotel offers a close-in location with a grand view down the Miljacka over the city. A short 15 minute walk will take you into the heart of the Bascarsija or you can head higher where even grander views of the city will await. The rooms are normal hotel rooms. The restaurant is fine. Prices are reasonable and somewhat negotiable. There are cheaper places to stay and much more expensive places to stay - ie Holiday Inn. None sit above the Basceni (City swimming pool).

Stay here for the views and the close-in location.

My friend and I stayed at Identico Rooms for 3 nights during a visit to Sarajevo in May 2007.

These basic rooms are located right in the heart of the old Turkish region of Bascarsija, just a few metres from the famous "Pigeon Square".

We paid 50KM (25 Euros/17 GBP) per person per night for an en-suite triple room. This price included just the room, no breakfast. The owner said that they don't provide breakfast as there are dozens of cafes offering cheap snacks right outside the hotel. This proved to be very true.

    Location

Identico Rooms offers a superb location in the heart of Bascarsija. As soon as you leave the hotel's front door you are right in the middle of this bustling Turkish quarter of the city. Dozens of cafes, restaurants and shops can be found just minutes away, and the famous "Pigeon Square" is less than 100 metres away.

    Rooms

We stayed in a triple room. This consisted of 3 single beds, a television (with a very poor signal), bedside cabinets, large wardrobes and very little else. Furnishings are at a premium here. Rooms are basic, clean and comfortable, but far from luxurious. Our room had a small but spotlessly clean en-suite bathroom (with bathtub and shower) and we were given clean towels daily.

We were initially offered a smaller room on the hotel's top floor (for just 30KM per person per night). This involved a rather precarious climb up the steep wooden staircase. This room was tiny, with two single beds and no other furnishings. The ceiling was so low as to cause me to have to duck upon entering the room and there was no space for our luggage. Only consider this cheap room if you're literally looking just for a place to sleep at night. Visiting the shared shower room and toilet involves another trip down the steep stairs to the ground floor.

The third room (35KM per person) is the mid-range option. It is located on the ground floor, next to the shared bathroom and consists of one single bed and one bunk bed.

    General

We stayed at Identico Rooms on the recommendation of Miran (owner of Hostel Miran in Mostar, where we had stayed before travelling up to Sarajevo) who phoned his friend at Identico and arranged everything for us.

Upon arriving at Sarajevo train station, we were met by one of the staff from Identico and he dragged our bags to the nearby tram for the 10 minute journey to Bascarsija. Along the route, he pointed out sights of interest and told us more about Sarajevo.

Arriving at the hotel, we were taken down to the sitting room in the hotel's basement and enjoyed coffee and Turkish Delight with the owners, while watching Bosnian soap operas on an old television with a very erratic signal.

During our stay, we were invited down to the sitting room each day where we would generally spend 10 minutes talking about football and eating Turkish Delight. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. They lent us an umbrella on the first night when the heaven's opened just as we were on our way out. They brought up Google Earth on the sitting room's computer to show us the way to the stadium when we were heading to FK Sarajevo's football match. On the morning that we left, one guy got up at 5am to book us a taxi to the airport.

Very basic rooms, but the location is superb! Friendly, helpful staff. Overall, good value for money. Recommended!

Sartour Hostel: The best hostel in Sarajevo?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed here for four nights. I got a single room for 15 euros (30KM) per night excluding breakfast. The hostel is run by two brothers, Sead and Mirza and their father Ismet. It's situated about a fifteen minute walk from Bascasija (the old town centre) in a very quiet street off Kovaci.

There's a balcony from where you can sit and take in stunning views of the city. There's also a garden with plum and apple trees, tables and chairs. Car parking is also available.

They can also arrange guided tours either by car or on foot.

Guest House Halvat: Excellent Pension in the Old Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We found this place on the internet and as there were few reviews of places in Sarajevo, and frankly we didn't have the budget for the Holiday Inn, we plumped for this one.

It was a fantastic choice. The owners obviously have a taste for the mediterranean and France in particular perhaps and were really friendly.

It's perhaps not the cheapest place in the city, but I'm glad we went for a safe bet that turned into a great bet!

We stayed in a lovely large room in the attic, with it's own bathroom, tv etc. It was stylishly decorated and comfy. If I remember rightly it was also air-conditioned which was a god-send in the June heat of 2003.

The breakfast was nice and set us up for each days jaunt through town. Also, free access to the internet was very useful.

The location is great, just up the road in the old town. Some of the views over Sarajevo were fantastic from here.

Holiday Inn: A truly ugly hotel.........
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is your typical Holiday Inn.

The building is the one very unique point of the hotel. It is bright yellow and brown in colour and stands out. Despite the fact that I think the Holiday Inn building in Sarajevo is an ugly duckling it is one of the landmarks of the city, plus with it's unique design it is hard to miss it.
