    Solid five-storey building with 135 places capacity. Rooms with 2, 3, 4 or 5 beds, several dorm type of rooms and four appartments. Half of its rooms are with bathrooms and WCs. The rest of the rooms share bathrooms and WCs on each floor.

    The place is crowded in August because of the Danovists meeting.

    The chalet is located on the Sixth (Ribnoto) Lake’s shore. It is a solid two-storey building with mansard with 92 places capacity. The rooms are with 2, 3, 4, 6 or more beds.

    The biggest advantage of the chalet is the wonderful view to the Sixth lake.

    This is where the Danovists are camping in August. So, if you go there at that time of the year do not get surprised that the place is crowded.

    One-storey old building with 36 places capacity. The rooms are either with three or with six beds. No bathrooms. WC outside of the building.

    In the period 1994 – 2000 it was abandoned.

    Two-storey building with 22 places capacity. Rooms with 3, 5 or 6 beds. No bathrooms and WCs. WCs ourside of the building.

    Works only during the summer season.

    What I saw from the outside is not promissing. The windows are naild with wooden boards, so I would stay out of this place if I have an option :)

    We stayed at Hotel Samokov, 4 star, swimming pool, gym, restaurant, bar. Not bad. BTW parking is paid (???)
    Reservation needed especially in winter. Less expensive in summer.

    Skakavitsa is the oldest tourist chalet in Bulgaria, built in 1922. Nowadays, it consists of two buildings. We stayed at the smaller one. Don't expect any luxury - there are no showers, no hotwater, just very cold running water. It doesn't look too clean either. They provide bedding, but it's a good idea to bring an extra sheet to use under the naked blankets.
    We stayed in a 5-bed room. The first night, it was full, the other one we were alone. In July and August, reservations (especially in the weekends) are advisable.
    Price: 10 lv (appr. 5 euro) per person per night.
    There is a 'restaurant' downstairs where they offer beans soup, barbeque, salads, breakfast, coffee, beer, coke, etc. You can also bring your own food and eat there.
    The conditions are quite poor but the man who runs the hut is quite nice. On the way down he even gave us a lift to Sapareva Banya.

  • Directions: The only way to get to Skakavitsa is to get by minibus to an area above Panichishte (after Sapareva Banya) and then hike for about 1-2 hours. It's a very steep path, by a river that runs in cascades, very nice. There are no roads going there.

    We didn't stay there, just had lunch on the benches outside, and had coffee and soda from the little cafe in the back (and used the bathroom to wash with hot water after washing with ice cold water for two days :) )

    This is another base for the Seven Rila Lakes area. Actually, it's right above the lowest lake of the group. There is a cafe, restaurant (don't expect too much), and some of the rooms have individual bathrooms. There are postcards and maps sold in the lobby. The booth also keeps the stamp for the '100 National Tourist Sites' booklet.
    Beside the hut there are horses/mules and jeeps. The horses can transport you to the other side of the lakes (Bubreka lake). We didn't try that, but heard that it was 20 lv per person. By jeep you can get down to civilization, althouth I heard that it's illegal for motor vehicles to offer transportation, as the hut is within the boundaries of Rila National Park...

    • See the intruction page on Rila. We had no other choice than stay in the abandoned house. It gave us shelter during the rain and thunder and certainly was different kind of an experience. It was next to a sand pit and we joked between us that somebody could kill us and bury in the sand and nobody would ever know what happened to us, because nobody knew that we decided to visit Rila!

    This "cover" has 30 beds, where you can spend the night just 200 m under Musala peak. The thing is, everyone sleeps in one big room, and the check-out has to be before 8 am in the morning. Weekends and holidays the accomodation is available by reservations, because there are many people staying!

    The ordinary covers in Bulgaria are simple small huts, where you have to help yourself for everything, because there isn't anyone. This one has permanent crew, there are foods and drinks, heat and electricity.
