Travel Tips for Sozopol

Sozopol Harbour

by Nobbe

The small harbour of Sozopol is a great escape if you want to relax for a bit. Here you can watch the local fishermen unload their latest catch, which will later turn up in one of the restaurants nearby.

Animal Lovers

by ChristinaNest

If you go to Sozopol, you'll notice the hundreds of stray cats in the streets, especially in the Old Town. You wouldn't feel sorry for them. As there's a restaurant/tavern/cafe in any other house, or a generous lonely granny, these cats get enough food and care from both owners and tourists. You can judge that by their rich and thick furry coats and quite round bellies... And the way they lie in the sun on top of a fence or in the street, half closing their eyes, you know that they're blissful. They look so happy that I've often envied them. They have their own territory and walk their few maters lazily from time to time. If you try to 'contact' them, they look back with self-satisfaction and contempt...
Besides the cats, there are street dogs too, although not that many. Once walking in a quiet street the cute little puppy in the pic came to me and we started playing. I wished I could've taken him home, but since I didn't want a third world war with my mother, I had a photo with him and had to say bye...

Sozopol-the town of rescuing

by julia79

Sozopol is one of the most popular summer resorts in Bulgaria. It is a small town, but in the summer it becomes very crowded. It is not the quiet place you dreamed of, but if you enjoy crowded places and night life-this is your place. At least this is my opinion, although I was there only for 3 days several years ago. Maybe I'm wrong, but definitely not, as I know how Bulgarian resorts like Sunny Beach and others were turned into "party" places ;)
Well, Sozopol is a pleasant place, but I'm sure you can find a better one if you want to visit Black Sea in Bulgaria.
Let's look at the history of Sozopol. The fact is this is the oldest town on the Bulgarian area of Black Sea. The centre of the town is situated on a small peninsula and the islands Saint Ivan and Saint Peter are near it.
The one thing I remember from Sozopol is the long market-place near the beach. You can find souvenirs, sweets, clothes, beach things, umbrellas, food... whatever you need:) This place made me crazy because I had to walk all this way to the beach, passing by people people people and food food food....
Well, there are a lot of good restaurants there. You can find very nice traditional Bulgarian restaurants serving good food. You can also go to a disco or a night club.
Enjoy your stay! :)

Sozopol-New and Old

by Avala

"Old Sozopol"

Situated 34 kilometers south of Bourgas upon a small peninsula, Sozopol is the oldest town at the Bulgarian seaside. Founded in the year 610 B.C. by the Greeks, the colony called Apolonia flourished as a mediator between the world of the Greek and the world of the noble Thracian tribes. Today, that fascinating place is a large tourist center, remarkable for its unique stone and wooden houses, that date as far back as the 19th century. Some of them (about 45) are even declared National Cultural Monuments.

"New Sozopol"

The modern part of the town is located nearby the old one. One of the 2 beaches is situated there- on the eastern part of Harmanite cape. Numerous cafes, discotheques and suchlike await guests along the high street "Republicanska'. Apolonia- the colony that once existed here was not just an important trade center, but also a seat of culture and art, a great tradition that has been preserved up to now thanks to the annual festival, which takes place in September. It lasts 10 sleepless days and nights, filled with music, dancing, all sorts of performances, films, exhibitions, etc. The loveliest beach nearby Sozopol is the one at the Dyuni vacation center. After Dyuni, the seaside road passes by the exotic marsh area called "Arkutino". That area covers a territory of 62 ha, where tourists have the opportunity to see some rare plant species, such as water- lilies, irises and creeping lianas. A few kilometers south of the marsh area, the Ropotamo river is to be seen, which was declared a natural reserve. River navigation is another tourist attraction, which is a must. And as far as transport to Sozopol is concerned, it is well- organized and realized through private or state- owned transport firms.

"Other Things about Sozopol"

But it is not only them that attract tourists, but also the two beaches with fine sand and especially the local people?s hospitality. In July and August Sozopol resembles a beehive, filled with tourists and during the winter, it turns again into a quiet and romantic fishing settlement. That seems to attract a lot of artists, writers, actors, etc. If you take a walk along the narrow winding lanes, you could notice a great number of houses, dating from the Bulgarian Renaissance. Then, most of the houses with stone foundations, roomy second floors and roofs covered with Mediterranean tiles were built up. Small restaurants and cafes are to be found along the coastal Morski Skali and Milet lanes, which tourists might visit to taste Sozopol specialties ? meals of local mussels and dried mackerels, prepared in a number of different ways. On the other hand, these tiny restaurants have another advantage, except the delicious meals and it is the magnificent scenery they face ? the offing and the port.
