Bulgaria has started to develop as a tourist destination only recently, so we're lagging behind in terms of good websites where one can check out details of hotels/hostels (especially smaller and thus cheaper places), read comments or make bookings/payments online. I've come across few good websites for hostels and these are: Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv hikers-hostel Varna Gregory's Backpackers hostelscentral Sofia hostelmostel I know someone who stayed in the hotel at the central sofia station, they said that although it looked dodgy it was really clean and safe and nice and cheap. In Sofia i usually stay in dorms/apartments in Student town (Studentski grad) ..that is the best!!! u get two-bed room with fridge, TV, bathroom or little bit more luxurious apartment for unbelievable cheap prices and u r right in the middle of the party scene. Tons of caffes, pubs, restaraunts, young people, close to Vitosha mountain. Booking is little bit tricky as u have to go to building number 42, entry #2 where the inspectors and cashiers are, ask for "kasa", pay there and then they give u the key for your building [#55] which is few blocks away. So this "kasa" place is open between 8am and 4pm and they take only cash.Last time i stayed in the most luxurious apartment (pretty basic but cool) and i payed 18 leva per night!!!! It had even cable and all the things that come with a hotel. Very good website to start your search for hotels is: motoroads
I know it can be pain in the neck to get in contact with smaller cheaper places. ..as usually they dont have websites and emails. But thats why VT is for...may be we can help Also what i do when i have nothing booked especially in smaller towns, i just ask around for a small cheap private hotel...i've never been disapointed...moslty because i can see the place and if i dont like it i keep asking. I've booked hotels online in Sofia for example and i wasn't very happy, as owners advertise little bit more than they have:) If u get a chance to stay in a small house -like hotel u'll feel like u r close guests to the owners. I'd never forget the many times we're invited at the owners table to drink with them for free and chit chat. In the touristy towns, there are lots of people offering rooms at the very bus/train station. Theme: Other

living room in the private apartment by bijo69 The best thing about this hostel is the remarkably friendly and helpful stuff. If you book a single or a double here (like I did) you get a room in a private apartment close by, so I can't comment on the dorms. The private rooms could have been kept a bit better though ( well, cleaner). Breakfast is included as is pasta & beer for dinner.

Pliska Hotel by ettenaj When we arrived I thought " not bad " on the whole it looks really nice. Two pools, one indoor, sauna massage and jacuzzi. Buffet style breakfasts with great choice, night club underneath. What more could I ask for, THICKER WALLS!!!!. It was as if we spent the entire time with our next door neighbours, even to sleeping with them.!! Snoreing from every direction, it was horrid. People upstairs wearing heeled shoes sounded as if they were coming through the ceiling. And as for closing doors, I dont think anyone in the place could close a door quietly, BANG!!!!!!
The only outstanding quality I think this place had was too allow all the local " ladies of the night " in at any time of the day or night and they were quite open about it!!!!!!! OPEN MINDED OR NOT THIS i THOUGHT WAS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! The place was certainly very clean and comfortable and with 2 walls of windows there was lot of natural light - I had a huge twin room with windows that opened out over the valley and looked over to the hills across. I also had a balcony and the bathroom facilities were just out the door across the small corridor. Bobi has table and chairs outside next to the swimming pool - yes a small hillside hotel with a pool! - so I was able to choose from a delicious selection of Bulgarian traditional meals and accompaniments and dine outside in the dusk and cool of the evening. When it got a bit too chilly we were able to continue our conversations and enjoy a pot of tea down in the dining room - where Bobi had his visitors book - happily pointing out the other Australian visitors he had had previously!
With Bobi's outgoing personality, keen to meet the person of the traveller and exchange life stories and cultures and experiences, this is a great place to have get to know a bit of Bulgarian life - as well as being up on a hill above the valley of Etara with a nice view and peace and quiet. I wanted to stay around here as I was wanting to visit the Etara Ethnographic museum enroute to Veliko Tornovo - and this guesthouse was only a few minutes drive away - could actually see some of the rooftops of houses in the museum area from Guesthouse Corona. At the lowest price of all the hotels I checked out in the area! I had an excellent salad entree, kebabs, baked peppers and a pot of tea for only about £4 and then delicious Bulgarian yoghurt with honey, and coffee of course for about £1.50 for breakfast. I had arrived at Plovdiv in the dark, driving up from my days drive from Sofia to Rilska Monastery and Bansko - arriving in a city with main roads that composed of tunnels that went under and around the city and following the map was rather difficult - but being on a main road was one of the easiest landmarks to head for - it was advertised in my Lonely Planet as being a good 2 star/budget hotel - I think it must be more like 3 star as right from the reception the service and decor is good quality. 48 euro for a single room, or 93 Leva, or single luxury room as is called by Hotel Leipzig, the reception staff were very helpful - parking was provided in front of reception with ticket and boom gate security. 24 hour reception and bar - with drinks and snacks available all night. As it was my birthday I wanted to try some Bulgarian wine - they directed me to the restaurant supervisor and then to another staff member who is a bit of a wine expert and she totally recommend to splash out on their Khum Traminer - it was 15 euro for a bottle but it really was as excellent as she said it would be. The room was very clean - with interesting red wallpaper and carpet, and matching red and black with flowers tiles in the bathroom. Huge window with night views - that included fireworks going off at several times - and then daylight views to the old town - only problem was that the hairdryer had been attached to the wall so close to the towel hanger that the hairdryer kept dislodging and starting up with a loud noise. Also the internet connection that was apparently included via the cable I was given would not connect. and when tried to phone reception the phone made no connection.
The buffet breakfast that is included is excellent! Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 70 Ruski Boulevarde, PlovdivPhone: 0035932654000Directions: About 20 minutes walk to the Old Town through King Simeons parkWebsite: www.leipzig.bg

the hell of mondane lodging in Bulgaria by ger4444 In Bulgaria there are plenty of accommodation options. Maybe you will find the quality of the accommodation not good enough for yourself; I myself was however quite satisfied about the places for lodging that I had found. In Bulgaria you wont have much trouble to find in each town or village that is in some way a tourist attraction, a place to sleep. Mostly you don’t have to make reservations. Just ask around by locals where there are hostels or go to the tourist information. The only situation in which you better can make a reservation is, when you expect to arrive very late in the evening or at night; then, especially in towns with lots of tourists it could be hard to find a place where they have a room left. But, in emergency cases, youth hostels, if they are present, will let you sleep somewhere on a mattress inside their hostel, so that you will not have to sleep in the streets! Of course there is dual pricing in accommodation. Foreigners pay more money for all categories of accommodation. Yet, thies is also a vague ‘policy’ it often really depends on your own additude and the person offering the accommodation. For example, in Bansko I have Stayed the first night at a – according to my standards – reather luxurious family run hotel. (my room had a private bathroom, television, livingroom, balcony etc, so quite better then a dormitory). The owner of the place said he wanted 30 lv for the room – which is still cheap! – but I said that I was a student and it was too expensive for me. Actually it was, for my budget only permitted a max of 15 to 20 lv per night. When I said that I had to look for another place to sleep then, he decided that it was ok for 15 lv, of course he had rooms that where still unoccupied and 15 lv is always better than a room that is not being sold for the night! Another thing was that when I checked in together with Bulgarians I had met during travelling; they helped me by arranging a deal with the hotelstaff to get me also the same price as they did have to pay. 'aunt' Dora in plovdiv, a staying at the family by ger4444 In some villages and cities you can also find private rooms. These are really an interesting option for lodging. You have the opportunity to stay at homes of locals for a few days and experience the reality of the Bulgarian way of living. Of course there are locals offering private rooms who keep distance, but there are also families in their own houses where you are invited to dinner and hang around. The latter mostly speak English and/or have children who do so and are interested in foreigners. It’s a good way to meet the Bulgarian and find people who can show you around in the local nightlife! During my trip I stayed a few times with locals. Sometimes they put me in a kind of guesthouse where there were other back-packers; on the other occasion I had a room in the house that they now and then offered to tourists. In larger towns, such as Plovdiv, locals who offer their private rooms might live in the suburbs – f.e. in flats – so that you are not situated comfortably in the centre as you are when you are staying at a hotel. But in villages like Melnik, you are likely to have a good central location and not some place in the woods. So, always ask where the rooms are, before you make a decision. Yet, in most cases – as I experienced – they have a car and take you to the place to view the room in advance. Then the question is, how to find these private rooms? They are not in toursist guides and also often not known by tourist offices, although there are exceptions. The best thing to find these rooms is this: when you arrive at the train or busstation, just hang around a bit and the people who have these rooms will approach you. They of course exactly know when a bus or train is arriving with potential customers. The rooms I was in were comfortable and clean. The good thing is that you have also your ‘own’ bathroom you don’t have to share it with 20 other people. There also are special agencies who intermediate between owners of private rooms and tourists One of these is in Bansko for example and is called KSV
Prices for private rooms vary. I paid between 5 lv in Melnik to 10 lv in Plovdiv. Theme: Other

dining at the hizha by ger4444 Mountainhuts are open to everyone. If you want to hike in the mountains you can make oneday hikes from and back to the hizha or can decide to hike from hizha to hizha. I only was in the Pirin mountains, but I think that the following information is general. The same as has been said about the youth hostel can be said about the mountain hut: if you arrive at a hut and they don’t have any beds; they wont let you sleep outside; they always arrange a place to sleep somewere one a matras on the ground or they let you put your own equipment on the ground. You are allowed to make use of all the facilities. Sometimes they will charge you for the full price in this situation, others wont ask money. So, you don’t have to book for mountainhuts; a thing that would be very bizar actually! (it isn’t even possible as far as I know) Mountainhuts are of course very Spartan; don’t need to tell that. In the hizha’s I was, there was there was a buffet/diningroom and a bar. Of course, because the main purpose of the mountaineering population at a mountain hut is climbing and hiking, you must not be surprised that the bar will be closed at 12 pm because vereyone wants to get up early in the morning. Prices for the hizha vary from 10 to 30 lv for one night.
How to get to a mountainhut with all your luggage? Well, lets say that you only have a backpack. Still, it can then be very though to carry all your stuff in on your back to the first mountainhut (which can be a walk of 5 to 6 hours) There are some possibilities then. First you can leave your luggage and take all the necessary things for your hike in a smaller rug sack, You leave the rest at the hotel, hostal etc, in the village from where you are departing to the mountains, that would be f.e. Bansko if you were hiking in the Pirins. But then you have to pay double; e.g. the hotel and the hizha. The other ting is, that you go to the office of the national park (in case the area is a national park) and ask if they can put up your luggage in a room. That’s what I did and it doesn’t cost money. The third possibility is to take a minibus (in case of the Pirin mountains, the first hizha next to Bansko was accessible by road) to the mountainhut and drop your luggage over there. Theme: Other

by ger4444 Yes: you can actually sleep at a monastrie. They offer accommodation not only to pilgrims but also to tourists. Monastries are of course a bit more Spartan then hotels but it might be a great experience to stay there for the night. Monasteries, such as the Rila monastery have different types of rooms and different prices. There are f.e. rooms that do not include showers. I think, especially in the case of Rila, its good to arrive as early as possible – in tourist season – to get a room; because all tourists of course prefer to stay at a monastery. As I arrived at the Rila monasterie; the place was already overbooked, whereas it was as early as 4 pm! On the other hand; maybe I was really unlucky that day – or they did not liked my face – because at a place such as the Rila monastery, that is rather located in a remote place; many tourists arrive there by touringbus, hang around for a couple of hours and then go back to wherever they came from before sunset! So, then its strange that the place could be overbooked. However, if you want the exact information about staying at monasteries you can call in Bulgaria tis number: 02-987 – 56611. Theme: Other
