VT's Main Hostel for backpackers

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 14, 2011

I recently spent three nights at the Hostel Mostel in Veliko Tarnovo and can recommend it to young travellers looking for a bed for the night with an evening meal with free beer and a breakfast all included in the price which is as cheap as chips anyway.

The dorms are big and light and airy with adequate bunks to sleep in and drinks at reception that are the same price as paid outside.

The showers were always hot and there were adequate toilets and for the price excellent value.

Unique Quality: The most outstanding quality of this Hostel is the staff who are welcoming and helpful one of whom needs a special mention - Todor known as Tod is one of the most polite and helpful people I have ever met.

Whilst in Bulgaria I fell and banged my head and lost the key to my hire car.I had also lost my mobile phone and didn't speak a word of Bulgarian.

when I explained my situation Tod took charge of the situation and using his own mobile telephone speaking Bulgarian he arranged with the car hire company to get a replacement key sent to me from Stara Zagrada and chased the company regularly for progress until a replacement was received.

When you realise how little the staff of a Hostal are paid, this unselfish act of using his own mobile for long distance calls alone sets him apart for special praise.

Directions: Set at the end of Gurko Street a managable walk to the City Centre - close to the castle

Hotel Mostel in VT is the sister (Or brother) of the hostel mostel in Sofia, and it is just as great!
Cheap accommodation that includes free beer, free dinner, free breakfast and in a great location with friendly staff and good common areas - pretty much perfect - all at a good price
I paid 60 lev for a double private with en suite.
dinner was susage and potato and they do cahnge it each night im told (sofia one didnt when i was there) and you get a big bottle of beer per table so not if everyone turns up u get to eat more and drink more.
breakfast was bread and cheese and salad and tea but fine
its just a 5min walk to the fortress or a 5min walk into town
its quite far from the train/bus station though
great chill out areas inside and out

This is run by the owners of the Hostel Mostel in Sofia and is a bit more homely. Like the Hostel Mostel in Sofia you get good beds, free internet, free breakfast and dinner and a good common room. There is also a barbeque and outside area for when the weather is good.

After my "great and beautiful day" in bucharest i finally got the train to Veliko, actually the train went to Sofia and Thessalonika through Veliko ..or at least this was my idea
The train took off from bucharest so late 2330 more or less !! so once in the dark train we sat down in a compartment for 6 people where it was two men. i was chatting with one of them for so long about bulgaria ..he was a university teacher graduated in Archeology so it was so so interesting....
I remember that cross the border is not always easy ...cops are for long time looking passports ..it was so bored and this is the question why mostly trains are not on time

some people told me that in the turkish border the train was stopped for 7 hours and usually does for 5hours !!! yes i couldnt believe it !!!

Talking on the compartment they told me that the train didnt stop in Veliko ... it stopped in Gorna Oyarzevitsa (maybe its not the correct spell sorry).. 10 kms away from Veliko ..Damn!!!!

Besides there is a huge problem it was my first time with cyrilic forms and was too hard to get the chance to translate to english !! first you need to translate the words in bulgarian and if u understand what means those letter joined so translate it in english !!!! so heavy !!

Those people helped me telling me that was the station to hop off ...once time off i walked down to the main entrance ...it was a damn desert , the word is nothing .. a ghost city !! lol

Unique Quality: i was so so lucky in that moment and i still say thanks those people....the man sat down by my side on the compartment who got off where i told me in english that i could join him and his friend who came to the station to pick him up if i needed some help to get Veliko .... it was dark but it seem full clear day !!!! and the sun were shinning !!!!!

Such a great people !! indeed they carry me almost to the very street where the hostel was... i could asked more?? ...such incredible thing.... it was so so cold then and i managed to go up the steep cobbled stone narrow street through the light brown door that you see in the picture,... I WAS THERE !!!!
