Travel Tips for Veliko Turnovo

Take lots of Photos

by scubaphoto

Get up early and explore the town while it is still quite. Take your camera and get some nice shot of the sunrise as it lights up the little houses nestled along the sides of the gorge. The town itself. Off the beaten track for many and still retains it tradition look.

Typical style

by DPando

Suc ha wonderful thing is stroll around by the main street full of exchange houses and trndy clothes, pubs, restaurants in the edge over the river ...
Now the old town quarters are preserved with their Bulgarian Renaissance houses and their dislocated terraces, with their fine interior, handicraft workshops and cafes

Take A Walk Down The Riverside.

by johngayton

When you get to the end of Gurko Street, heading towards Tsarevets, there's a sort of muddy footpath (well it was muddy when I was there) heading towards the river. As I discovered this isn't a tourist footpath but rather the path leading to the back doors of the Gurko Street houses and where it ends is somebody's front yard (where the chickens barked at me and the dog clucked - or maybe it was the other round?).

Where I first reached the river there's a delapidated flood-control weir with a footpath over to the opposite river bank. I thought about crossing it, but on closer inspection it was in a worse state of repair than Sofia's Lion Bridge (and that's saying something) and so just had a wander back towards the city and what I hoped would be the proper bridge. This made for a pleasant wander until I met the dog and chickens at which point I had to turn back.

Not perhaps something to go out of your way for but an interesting digression nevertheless.

When you're tired of walking or when you need to go to a place out of town (such as Arbanasi or the train station) your best option is a taxi. I found all taxis surprisingly honest (especially compared to other Bulgarian cities) and the drivers are friendly as well. Fares are very cheap.

Tsarevets Fortress

by bijo69

Tsarevets Hill is probably the main sight of Veliko Tarnovo. The first fortress there was built by Byzantines between the 5th and 7th century and then overtaken by the Slavs and Bolgars between the 8th and 10th century. The Byzantines moved in again in the 12th century and it's peak was reached when Veliko Tarnovo (Tarnovgrad at that time) became the capital of the second Bulgarian Empire in 1185. That period ended in 1393 when the Turks overtook the Balkan peninsula.
So far the remains of over 400 houses, 18 churches and a lot of other buildings have been excavated. Some things have been restored, mainly the patriarch' s complex.
In the evenings you usually have a spectacular sound & light show.
