    Cheap AND Central

    This is an ideal budget hotel in Sofia's centre - the emphasis being on "budget". Rooms are basic but all are ensuite. Housekeeping standards are reasonably good. Reception staff are friendly and helpful although neither particularly swift nor professional.

    Breakfast is really naff and not really worth searching out but at least the minibar does contain beer!

    I have a lot of niggly things to say about this hotel, but they are all niggles, and for a cheap city centre hotel it was fine.

    The niggles included:

    Check-in taking about 15 minutes whilst the receptionist dealt with another guy checking in - you have to fill in your own registration form and then the receptionist couldn't read my handwriting and so ended up having to rewrite it herself.

    Check-out was another 15 minutes - this time while the receptionist phoned the housekeeping department to make sure that I was being honest about my mini-bar consumption. It appeared that there was a mineral water short! HA!

    Room walls are a bit thin and my 1st-floor room must have been adjacent to the main downpipe for the upper floors sewerage as I could hear every toilet being flushed.

    Although the room was relatively spacious and the marble windowsill made for an excellent work surface there was nowhere to actually sit - ach a quick rearrangement of the bedside table and addition of a pillow made that OK.

    Unique Quality: Good points:

    Central location, just down the road from the Palace of Justice, made it easy to find and easy to get to and from.

    The neighbourhood is very much a local one and there's some excellent little bars and restaurants on the side streets.

    Easy access for public transport - tram stops just outside and the main blvd Mariya Louiza on the corner.

    Coffee machine the 1st floor landing at only 40 stotinki a cup.

    Freebie WiFi worked perfectly.

    So, on balance, not a place I would choose to stay again but if strapped for cash would.

    Directions: About a 20 minute walk from the railway station, go right at the Palace of Justice and the hotel is about 100 metres on the other side of the road.

Taxis from the airport

Hi, similar to the last questions - I am arriving in Sofia with my husband at about 11pm at night at Sofia airport. Can anyone tell me how late the buses run into town? I realise there are also taxis and it sounds like I should book only from the OK Supertrans taxi desk if I don't want to be ripped off! The thing is I am wondering if this taxi desk will be open at that time of night? Does anyone know?

[Sofia University] is available from 05.00 a.m. - to 11.00 p.m, all year round.

I'd give you a more general tip: whenever and where ever you need to use a taxi in Sofia, pay attention to the tariff of the taxi. You will see it in written at the back side windows of the taxi. The approximate price is about 0.56-0.60 leva per km - during the day 06-22h and about 0.70 leva per km - by night. Just have a look at the tariff.

The Tsar Osvoboditel monument by the renowned Italian Sculpture Arnoldo Zocci, is one of the most beautiful in Sofia. Situated on the square in front of the parliament building, it is an expression of thanks from the Bulgarian nation to its Russian liberators. The 14 meters high monument portrays the Russian Tsar Alexander II, astride his horse, holding the declaration of the War of Liberation. If you love playing chess there is something you can’t miss although this is not a typical tourist attraction. In front of the National Theater there is a beautiful green park with fountains next to which every day lots of people who like playing table or chess gather there for a symbolic tournament. There is always a crowd of people who sit in silence and watch them for hours and if you get too strenuous or tired of the game or too hot during the summer you can always cool yourself down in the fresh waters of the fountains:0)))))).

Club Saray

The name already suggests that this place is targeted to a specific group of people who fancy Oriental type of music. You can see that on the pictures as well :) So, in terms of music you should expect the following styles: Ethno, Turkish, Arabian, Greek, Indian and some popular dance hits. If you are not in to it you'd better not going there.

This is a relatively new club. It opend in December 2005. The interior is reflecting the name of the place and has some kind of Orintal flavour :) If you are interested, you can try out water pipe.

As a whole the service is good except for when the place is packed, then the service tends to be a bit slowlier. Also, if there are many people sometimes gets a bit too smokie. Prices are reasonable. As far as I remember there is no entrance fee.

Saray Club has theme parties for some of the week days. For example Tuesdays are usually set aside for Greek party, Wednesdays for Retro parties, Saturdays might offer you belly dancing show :)
