I took that bus in March 2004 and it took like 8 hours via Skopje. If you don't find for sure you'll find Skopje and from there Ohrid with no problem

Sofia has a history that goes...

by Niablue

Sofia has a history that goes back thousands of years. Through the centuries, many peoples have inhabited it and added to its rich and diverse history. The Thracian Serdi tribe settled here in the 7th century BC and gave the first recorded name of Sofia - Serdica. The Byzantines called it Triaditsa and the Slavs - Sredets. The modern city of Sofia was named in the 14th century after the basilica St. Sofia. In Greek, the word 'sofia' means wisdom. Today the city is a rich combinations of archaeological sites, that display the city's diverse history - castle gates and towers of Serdica, public buildings and streets thousands of years old along with modern buildings - administrative and business centers.

Gifts: what and when?

by Scarlie

if you are invited at someone's place, it is customary to buy flowers for the hostess and/or a bottle of wine for the host. If you can prepare from before, it will be great to bring something from your own country. The host may feel obliged to open the bottle and drink it with you but you are free to say no (see the tip on how to say no).
In some places it is customary to take your shoes off just after you step in the house (so make sure your socks are presentable;-)) It is polite to show that you want to take your shoes off and then take your cue from the host.
If you are visiting close friends with kids you may not want to disappoing the little ones: chocolate does the trick.

If you are given a gift, do not spare your thanks and praise. If you come from a reserved culture, make that extra effort to say more than just 'thanks'! You do not want your host losing sleep over whether you liked the gift or not. Useful things to say: "this will go nicely w/ my furniture", or "I'll use this next time I go to the sea". If you are not sure about what the gift actually is or does, simply ask. Your host will be more than happy to explain.

The Icon Collection

by potrerohillman

Beneath Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the "crypt" is the icon museum. This is a collection of icons and only icons. It is peaceful, well lit, well presented. Usually there are a few people among the hundreds of icons dating from just about all periods of Bulgarian religious art. For the art lover and the relgious, this is a treasure.
