Sofia Inn

Location, location, location

Hotels in Sofia are as expensive as anywhere in western Europe for the tourist. For Bulgarians it can be a lot less expensive, but for visitors a flat is sometimes the best choice.

I am not going to give the name of the agency I rented from because they turned out to be cheats - didn't give an advertised 10% discount.

A number of people have suggested that I name the agency so that others may be warned. This makes sense. See Tip #2

The flat itself was lovely. The furnishings attractive and well cared for. It was clean and well furnished. The location for visitors was in some ways ideal in other ways not so comfortable. In fact there was an interesting combination of pros and cons:

Pros: Newly renovated, well arranged, fully furnished kitchen, nice view of Mt. Vitosha over the rooftops, the windows overlooked an interesting variety of backyards, excellent location for visiting all sites and for trams everywhere. Back door entry to the building was locked, the front door had no handle just a key hole, good security, 5th floor and 2 above, so one can leave the windows open, the bed was king size.

Cons: Entrance to building filthy, dirty building, nasty graffiti, business neighbourhood - dead at night, streets empty and a bit daunting, lift had no door, was filthy dirty and smelled of urine. The bed was very soft and lumpy, the couch more comfortable to sleep on. Hot water not consistent, went from hot to cold all the time. Double doors to flat - inner door metal (steel?) with a lock and key like for a safe. Must turn it 4 times e.g. good security but frightening that they found it necessary to take such precautions.

Unique Quality: This flat was on Solunska Street close to Vitosha boulevard. It is a business district. Not so good for living - no nearby food shops but plenty of restaurants during the daytime.
