Hotel Makrelov: Perfectly decent modern hotel

Not at all pretentious, but a decent modern hotel, with friendly, helpful staff (Susie, the room cleaner, is especially kindly) and perfectly adequate rooms and food. When you arrive, don't make the mistake I made of walking up the steep steps outside to your room, but ask for the lift. (I think the girl at reception had forgotten to tell me about it.) Dinner is typical Bulgarian food - nothing special, but fine by me - which they cook for you in the kitchen. For breakfast, you choose option 1, 2, 3 or 4 from a menu, depending on what sort you want - with cheese, continental type, with eggs or whatever.

Friendly staff

Hotel Smolyan: Biggest hotel in town

Hotel Smolyan is the typical Balkantourist left-over. The first two floors have been renovated and rooms there are a bit more expensive than those on the "old" upper floors. I stayed in one of the unrenovated rooms and was quite satified even if the furniture is a bit dated. The rooms was clean and had a tv, but no fridge.
The reception staff was very friendly and helpful.
Buffet breakfast is included in the price.

The hotel has an indoor swimmingpool.

Hotel Crystal: Great Hotel

Wonderful new 3 star hotel run as a family business. Lovely rooms overlooking a small tranquil lake at the end of the town. The hotel is new - less than 1 year old I guess and is simply and elegantly designed. Bathrooms have nice powerful showers. Room has satellite TV. Restuarant has a large menu although food can be a bit salty. You can dine outside on the terrace overlooking the lake. Very good value overall. We paid 55 leva for a double room.

Great views, clean rooms and bathrooms
