Nikolai Gyaurov was a great opera singer, born in Velingrad. He's told to be the bass number one on the planet. People in Bulgaria and especially his fellow citizens are so proud of him.There is a peak in Antarctica called after him!

One of the most beautiful, traditional holidays in Bulgaria – Grandma’s Day or Midwives' Day is celebrated every year in Velingrad and it has become a tradition of the city. On this day, is given the recognition of doctors, nurses,midwives and grandmothers. Why grandmothers? In the past the grandmothers of the villages were the ones that helped the woman to give a birth. Grandma's Day celebration in Velingrad passes several stages.First in the lobby of Velingrad Municipality come mothers with their newborn children to attend the ritual "Giving the name of the child." Then everybody goes outside and dance %L [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_dances]horo and for the end on the stage on the main square (the official ceremony)are awarded the best doctors and midwives in the city.

"Velingrad"
This city lies in a high valley surrounded by beautiful mountains, but it was warmer than Sofia that day. We were going for our lunch, which was to be on the top of a mountain called Alabak - in one of our camps.
