all politics is NOT local
by ellielou
So, I'm walking around the in the old part of the city, and do my eyes deceive me, I see a bumper sticker that wouldn't look twice at if I had seen it at home, in my very 'blue' city in a very 'blue' state, but, somehow, seeing it on the streets (actually, it was parked on the sidewalk and blocking my way) of Old Plovdiv gave me pause.
Since VT is not a poltical site, I won't comment further on this, but did take a picture for these pages. All I can really say is: 01.20.09!!!!!!
(BTW: I'm not talking about the sticker that reads, "You suck!"

International Chamber Music Festival
by mirchica
I This is the oldest and only in its kind chamber music festival. It takes place since 1966, in the yard of the Ethnographic Museum in the Old Town. A proof for the international recognition of that festival is the participation of major performers, such as Ephra Neiman, Svyatoslav Richter, Danail Schafran, Alexis Veisenberg, Milcho Leviev, Mincho Minchev, Yuri Boukov, the Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Erfrut Orchestra, The English Symphony, London Serenade, the Schidloff Quartet, etc.(It's in yhe middle of June)
Bachkovo Monastery
by ChristinaNest
Bachkovo Monastery (Bachkovski Manastir) is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria. Although different from Rila Monastery, it is equally beautiful.
It was founded in 1083 by the georgian Gregorius Bacuriani. It was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks in the 15-16 centuries. It was rebuilt between 1604 and 1840! The cathedral church is from 1604 and the beautiful frescoes, from the 19th century, done by the most famous Bulgarian icon painter, Zachariy Zograf.
The icon of Virgin Mary, brough from Georgia in 1311 is famous and very important to worshipers. As far as I know, it is taken out during the parade on Virgin Mary's day, August 15th.
The crypt is the oldest surviving, dating back to the 11th century.
The main pic here is actually 2 pics taken one after the other, since I couldn't capture the inner part of the monastery in one shot. (Back then I had an old Russian Zenith camera, all manual and no wide-angle or zoom lense, still it took great shots!)
