Varna trip and money to use

by vincentbuhagiarooooo

Hi,
Me & my wife will be visting plovdiv and when we are there we would also consider visting Varna. Can any one help us out and tell us wich is the best and cheaper way to travel to Varna ( + time of trip) and what money best to use while we are on our holiday. Can we use the euro or best to use the bulgarian money.
regards

Can't help with the travel part but:

It is always best to use the local currency wherever you travel. Bulgaria has not adopted the euro: the currency is the Lev.

Even if you find someone/somewhere who will accept euros you can be sure that you will get a poorer exchange rate than if you change money beforehand.

Use lev, the local currency. Some hotels will accept Euro but it works out to be more expensive that way.

The Euro has a fixed rate of exchange.
Change your money in banks only.
Be sure to have your passport with you when you go to change your money.

Oh yes, one more comment.

Change only the most minimal amount that you will need at the airport to reach your hotel.

The going rate last April was 1.95 lev to the Euro. At the airport they game me only 1.65 lev to the Euro!

In all cases use levs. Officially this is the only legally used currency in Bulgaria. Change only in change bureaus, and the difference between the sell and buy rate should not be more than 0.02 lev.

From Plovdiv you can take either a train or a bus to Varna. There are 3 direct trains:
leaving 06:50 arriving 13:05
leaving 13:20 arriving 19:50
leaving 22:55 arriving 05:25

The price is 16.70 lv second class/20.90 first class, both plus additional 0.50 for a reserved seat, or 8.00/10.00 for a sleeping place.

There buses are at 06:45 - 14:05, 15:30 - 22:40, 23:30 - 06:00. The price is about 30 lv.

Varna is OK but on the whole it's a fairly average city. To me it didn't seem like a particular highlight of Bulgaria. Unless you have a specific reason to go there, maybe you would be better to look for places of interest closer to Plovdiv, or perhaps to spend time in the Bulgarian countryside rather than another city.

Travel Tips for Plovdiv

all politics is NOT local

by ellielou

So, I'm walking around the in the old part of the city, and do my eyes deceive me, I see a bumper sticker that wouldn't look twice at if I had seen it at home, in my very 'blue' city in a very 'blue' state, but, somehow, seeing it on the streets (actually, it was parked on the sidewalk and blocking my way) of Old Plovdiv gave me pause.

Since VT is not a poltical site, I won't comment further on this, but did take a picture for these pages. All I can really say is: 01.20.09!!!!!!

(BTW: I'm not talking about the sticker that reads, "You suck!"

Plovdiv's Tourist Information Centre

by johngayton

For everything you need to know about Plovdiv, including accommodation assistance, the Tourist Information Centre is located on the main square just next door to the main Post Office. Here you can get advice on public transport, local events and things to do and they have the usual freebie leaflets as well as guidebooks etc for sale.

If you are REALLY lost then the handy signpost outside tells you where you are in relation to the rest of the world LOL.

The official website is under construction at the time of writing but should eventually be found Here Address is pl Tsentralen 1 and the phone number is 032 65 67 94.

art galleries

by ger4444

At saborna street 14a you find an art gallery worth visiting. Its is housed in an old 1846 house and exhibits Bulgarian painters from the last 300 years. Its well signposted and explained in Englsih and you can get a guided tour in English for 10 lv per group. The admission is 2 lv and is free on Tuesdays. At ul K. Aleksander you find another gallery, which is on modern art. Its not that big, only two rooms on mainly abstract painting. Admission is 3 lv.

International Chamber Music Festival

by mirchica

I This is the oldest and only in its kind chamber music festival. It takes place since 1966, in the yard of the Ethnographic Museum in the Old Town. A proof for the international recognition of that festival is the participation of major performers, such as Ephra Neiman, Svyatoslav Richter, Danail Schafran, Alexis Veisenberg, Milcho Leviev, Mincho Minchev, Yuri Boukov, the Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Erfrut Orchestra, The English Symphony, London Serenade, the Schidloff Quartet, etc.(It's in yhe middle of June)

Bachkovo Monastery

by ChristinaNest

Bachkovo Monastery (Bachkovski Manastir) is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria. Although different from Rila Monastery, it is equally beautiful.
It was founded in 1083 by the georgian Gregorius Bacuriani. It was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks in the 15-16 centuries. It was rebuilt between 1604 and 1840! The cathedral church is from 1604 and the beautiful frescoes, from the 19th century, done by the most famous Bulgarian icon painter, Zachariy Zograf.
The icon of Virgin Mary, brough from Georgia in 1311 is famous and very important to worshipers. As far as I know, it is taken out during the parade on Virgin Mary's day, August 15th.
The crypt is the oldest surviving, dating back to the 11th century.
The main pic here is actually 2 pics taken one after the other, since I couldn't capture the inner part of the monastery in one shot. (Back then I had an old Russian Zenith camera, all manual and no wide-angle or zoom lense, still it took great shots!)
