Best Western Bistra & Galina: Tea And Coffee Makings!
This is a smart, modern, city centre hotel tucked away on a side-street just off the main road between the railway station and Svoboda square. It was easy to find (it would have been even easier if I hadn't attempted a shortcut!) and reception was friendly and welcoming.
The immaculately clean rooms, whilst modern, have a pleasant homely feel to them, are spacious, well-furnished and all have balconies. The free WiFi was fast and reliable and everything else worked perfectly.
Breakfast was a nice little buffet with the usual cheeses, sauasages, fruit, salads, yoghurts etc as well as a couple of hot items and sweet and savoury pastries.
Service throughout was warm, friendly and helpful: from the porter offering to take my (single carry-on sized) bag when I arrived to the receptionist phoning the railway station on my departure day to check that the previous days six inches of snow hadn't disrupted the trains - it hadn't!
Unique Quality: This was definitely the most "European" hotel I've stayed in in Bulgaria with all the trappings of a good quality 3, borderline 4, star establishment. There's a small leisure and spa centre with swimming pool, which I didn't use. In-room there's a well-stocked and reasonably-priced mini-bar, which I did use, and the kitchen offers 24 hour room service.
The best bit for me though was the provision of tea and coffee making facilities - first time here in Bulgaria! This was especially useful when I got pretty much snowed-in on the Sunday before my departure day and so had a VT catch-up day in my room. Reception gave me a courtesy call to see if I needed anything and when I asked for a top-up of the coffee and sugar that was smilingly delivered almost immediately.
All round this was an excellent hotel and though slightly more expensive than most the general standards made it value for money.

Anna Palace Hotel, Rousse: Anna Palace Hotel Good Value
We had finished a cruise down the Danube at Rousse, Bulgaria, and, unlike, our fellow travellers, chose to spend a night in Rousse rather than rush off to Istanbul or Bucharest.
It's a lovely, historic city, even if still a bit tatty after its treatment at the hands of the Communists for fifty years or so.
The Anna Palace is close by the Danube (near pontoon 2) and we found it by wandering along the river and soon spotting its quite distinctive yellow Dutch/baroque facade. Its only been an hotel since 2003 but had a long history includung, way back, being residence for Ambassadors fronm several European countries.
Our accommodation was comfortable, well priced (E59 for double including a quite ample breakfast) and quite convenient for a stroll through the quite gorgeous city. We were there on a sunny Sunday and it seemed that the whole town was out and about, with lots of al fresco street cafes.
Via the internet we had arranged for a private car (Demar Taxis) to take us to our Bucharest hotel- a trip of about 1.5 hours. All inclusive cost was E70, about E20 cheaper than other quotes from the Bucharest end. Highly recommend Demar, even if the car came close to take-off on a few occassions on thehighway!
Unique Quality: Don't worry about views of the Danube, there may be some from the roof, but not from the rooms. There are a couple of quite quaint suites available, roomy and replete with old fashioned stoves used a long time ago.
Staff speak quite adequate English and were pleasant. The hotel has both an indoor and also a patio restaurant with a huge menu of food and wines of OK quality. As a guest you receive a 10 per cent discount.
The hotel has a very inexpensive overnight laundry service, much prized after some time on the road.
