Varna-Odessa Ferry - Is it operating?

by cyeftich

I tried to make a booking last month and the agency said that it was unclear whether the Varna-Odessa ferry would be operating this summer. I was planning on taking the ferry July 3. If anyone has an update, I would appreciate it.

It is operating in summer, definitely.
Here is the timetable:

Thank you. That is great news.

If I may ask two follow up questions:
My ability to read Bulgarian is not strong. From the table, it seems to me that the date given in the left column is the date the ferry leaves Odessa for Varna. So, the ferry listed as 02/07 would arrive in Varna that evening and depart for Odessa in the early morning of 03/07. Is that correct?

Also, am wondering if advance bookings are necessary. I see from the fare chart that the agency I was trying to use was charging a large fee. Is it possible to just walk up and buy a ticket on the date of travel?

Kind regards,

It's actually in Russian but those languages are quite similar.
Well, the 1st column is the date of departure from Odesa. And all 3 other columns indicate the possible date of return to Odesa. They indicate the duration of stay in Bulgaria - 7,10,11 and 14 nights.

You can also look here, it is the timetable of Kyiv-Sozopol. that means Kyiv-Odesa by bus and from Odesa to Sozopol by ferry, this ferry goes via Varna. The lower table indicates the timetable with all the stops on the way.

Column 1- destination (the final stop is Sozopol)
Column 2- time of arrival to every destination (on the way to Sozopol)
Column 3- Stop
Column 4- time of arrival to every destination on the way back (the final stop is Kyiv)

It has just started its 2007 season on June 11. The travel time is 8-9 hours. The price of a return ticket is 140 Euro (there are rebates for groups).

Thanks to everyone for the response. I'm still confused. The site below suggests that the ferry is not operating for 2007 (though I appreciate a schedule has been published).

Any first-hand accounts as to whether the ferry is, or is not operating this week?

I'll be in Bulgaria in two weeks, and I'm trying to figure out whether I can get to Odessa via the sea.

As of September 2009, there is NO ferry between Varna and Odessa.

On inquiry by bus travel, I got to learn that there is a bus service leaving Varna at 14:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and arriving in Odessa the next day at 08:00. Essentially an 18 hour journey that costs Bulgarian Leva 88.00 (Euro 44.00).

Further information is available from the bus company in Varna at:
052-919-903 (Landline)
088-563-2049 (Mobile)

I believe this is the best and low cost option (at least for me) compared to train travel that requires changing trains and the wait time.

Travel Tips for Varna

Learn those backwards letters...

by RockTadgers

Pretty much everything in Varna is written in Cyrillic, particularly in the beach bars and cafes. There's not much concession for tourists who aren't familiar with this scary looking alphabet.

Here's a brief guide -

è - a backwards N is an 'I'
ù - is 'Sh'
ñ - is 'S'
ä - is 'D'
ç - is 'Z'
ö - is 'ts'
æ - is 'Zh'
ã - is 'G'
í - is 'N'
â - is 'V'
÷ - is 'Ch'
á - is 'B'
ô - is 'F'
õ - is 'H'
ï - is 'P'
ð - is 'R'
ë - is 'L'

There's a bunch more, but these are the basics. It's best to go with the basics first, but the most confusing part of cyrillic are the characters that look like Latin, but in fact do something different. Hope it helps!

Flying by the summer charter...

by tartanski

Flying by the summer charter flights from the many European cities is the cheapest way to get there , although scheduled flights are available to Sofia on a regular basis. The last time I flew there there was 2 flights a day from Sofia to Varna. Alternatives are the bus 12hours from Istanbul, but it only cost around 9USD. OR I have heard that there is a fast ferry service form IStanbul which takes about 3 hours!
Taxis are cheap but rip you off if they can . At least learn to ask how much to ...

I think it is something like Kolko Stroova za..

Why not to try a bus tour?

by cold_dead_bunny

While staying in Varna or surroundings you will come across many offers of bus trips. It worth attention because most of well known attractions in Bulgaria situated fairly close to Varna and require half or full day trip.

Approximate prices:
Nessebar 30lv
Balchik 25 lv
Shumen and Pobiti Kamani (stone forest) 40 lv
Veliko Tarnovo 70 lv

Also offered a day (or 2 days) trip to Istanbul (120-170 lv), you spent 2 nites in the bus roundtrip, but spend whole day in the city. I took it, and I think it worth its money for a first-look-at-the-city trip. It visits most of tourists attractions, though extremely tiring.

Zlatni Piasaci - Golden Sands

by novsco61

We stayed at Zlatni Piasaci, very commercialized resort, but very beautiful , with friendly people, good food and very nice beach. I've been there in years 2003 and 2004 and many new hotels and buildings were built in 2004.

The Sun Has Got His Hat On...

by RockTadgers

Varna is a great place to spend some time on the beach, whether it be as a main destination or as a stopover on a tour. It's a small resort, which attracts tourists without being as crass as nearby Sunny Beach or Golden Sands.

Even in the middle of summer, the sandy beach is crowded, but not unpleasantly so. You'll find plenty of room to put your towel down without sitting in other people's laps. The Black Sea water is shallow and warm, so ideal for kids, or bad swimmers like me.

There are numerous cafes and bars along the beach to grab something to eat, although be aware that EVERYTHING is in Cyrillic, so it's worth learning the basics of the alphabet in order to get anywhere. Further down, there's a strip of bars and nightclubs which open right out onto the beach, where there's usually a party to be found for anyone.

And it's cheap. Even on our budget of fifteen pounds a day, we struggled to spend it all. A great seaside break!
