A good hotel in the centre of Varna is Hotel Capitol, it is a 4 star hotel but not too expensive, we stayed there last Christmas, it has a web site so you can check on the internet.
As for the weather in October it is generally so-so, warm and sunny one day and cool and cloudy the next, just take clothing to cover all sorts of weather.

Hope you have a nice holiday,

Travel Tips for Varna

by Axel-M

Bulgaria occupies a relatively small area - 111 000 sq. km, but is
nevertheless distinguished by generous and varied nature - a sea with
a 380 km. long coastal strip and golden beaches, 16 mountains with
their own characteristic features, shelters valleys and high plateaus,
over 550 curative mineral springs, dozen of unique natural phenomena
and 2000 thrilling caves, a healthy climate and diverse flora and fauna.

Ferry to Odessa

by deeper_blue

There is ferry service in the summer months that travels overnight (twice a week) from Varna to Odessa in the Ukraine. Travel to Ukraine has been made a lot easier with the dropping of the Visa requirements for EU, US and Japanese citizens. If you want to get their outside of the season you must take a train through Romania and maybe Moldova (for which you will need a visa) to Lviv or Kiev.

The Cathedral of the Assumption

by Dalibor79

The 19th century Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is an imposing landmark, which contains a finely carved iconostasis and bishop's throne, some interesting murals and stained glass.

The 2nd century thermae are the remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria. During this century enough has been revealed by archaeologists to give a good impression of the original layout, though some parts of the building remain hidden under nearby streets. Coming across an extensive ancient building amidst the streets and houses of a modern city is not unusual in Bulgaria, but is always a delight.

Further from the centre, a granite monument commemorates the Battle of Varna, which took place in 1444. Here 30,000 Crusaders were waiting to sail to Constantinople when they were attacked by 120,000 Turks. The Polish King Ladislas was killed in a bold attempt to capture the Sultan Murad. The subsequent retreat foreshadowed Christendom's general retreat before the advancing Ottomans.

North of Varna there is a cluster of seaside resorts all with fine - sandy beaches but differing in size and style.

Visit the picturesque little seaside town of BALCHIK (about 30 minutes from Albena by car or minibus), which was once a Hellenic settlement and now serves as inspiration for local painters of seascapes. BALCHIK is also the site of the Summer Palace of Queen Marie of Romania, boasting beautiful gardens.

Short visit to Varna but Easter at Golden Sands

by michidutza

The third largest city in Bulgaria and major port to the Black Sea Coast, Varna seems to be a good destination for holiday;the Holly Virgin Cathedral and little St.Nicolas church impressed me during my short stop downtown.Lots of tourists are walking on a large boulevard near the seaside where one can find small terraces and shops, boutiques and plenty of seagulls. At 9 km North of Varna there is the Golden Sands resort, a place that looks better than the Romanian seaside of Black Sea Coast-Romanians knows what I mean!I was glad to discover Bulgaria can afford long, clean beaches with lots of pure dark yellow sand, groups of fresh vegetation (bushes)and proper, unpolluted air.Golden Sands appear to be a modernized resort, with lots of 4* and 5*stars hotels, nerwly built or recently renovated. Also, near the seaside blocks of apartments for sale.
