Varna's Open Air Theatre
As would be expected from a city vying for the designation of European Capital of Culture for 2019 Varna has a long history of hosting a broad spectrum of National and International events. The longest running of these is the Varna Summer Festival which began in 1926 and more recent events include the International Ballet Competition (since 1964), the International Jazz festival (since 1991) and the International Theatre Festival (1993).
On of the main auditoriums is the atmospheric, Roman-arched, open air theatre in the Sea Garden where the Ballet Competion is staged and is used as a venue for the other festivals.
Links below are for the Ballet Competition and Summer Festival respectively:
Yet Another Honest Taxi Driver!
The balance is slowly tipping in favour of Varna's taxi drivers!
After our visit to the Aladzha Monastery we reckoned we had time for a quick beer in Zlatni Piasatsi before our bus back. The quick beer was duly enjoyed at "Bavaria" and then we headed for the bus stop.
Just as we were arriving the bus was pulling away. An empty taxi had just passed us and the observant driver noticed that we'd missed the bus. He stopped and reversed up to us. To my surprise instead of trying to extort an inflated price from us he instead offered to take us into Varna for the price of the bus fare!!
Sensible guy as he was driving back to Varna anyway with his cab empty. Not only that but he was friendly and chatty. Hopefully Marina's got his details and I'll post these here if she has.
Aladzha monastery and the catacombs
Aladzha cave monastery is located around 15km from Varna towards Golden Sands. It name comes from the Turkish word for colorful. The name most probably stems from the colorful wall paintings found in the monastery.
The monastery is located in caves that are dug into a 25m high limestone cliff. Its are not known, but it is believed to date back to early Christianity.
In addition to Aladzha monastery, the area houses a similar monastery, called the Catacombs and a museum.
Golden Sands/Zlatni Pyasatsi
If you're looking for a typical beach holiday, head out to Golden Sands. The resort is located 18km North of Varna and has indeed a kilometers long stretch of fine golden sand. You have got a vast collection of accommodation here from recently built luxurious hotels to the more modest buildings from socialist times. Golden Sands offers all kinds of recreational actvities and is very popular (crowded) in summer.
