The Aladza Monastery
by viddra
The Aladzha rock monastery is situated 16km from Varna.
Its name comes from the Turkish word for colourful ("aladzha") due most probably to the bright colours of its wall paintings, dating back to the early Middle Ages.
It used to have two levels. The lower floor hosted the monks' private cells, common rooms (kitchen, dining room) and a small church, while the upper level was dedicated entirely to a chapel.
According to some historians, primitive monks' cells were built and inhabited in the 4th century AC. The entire monastery is considered to date back to the 12th century AC.
Unfortunately, nowadays only few of the frescoes are preserved (most of these to be found in the chapel).
The monastery is declared a cultural sight and houses a small museum.

Lovely interieur:), the menu is lovely as well, but I can't say that it's various...... We've been there 3 times and I can say that I've tried almost everything :D
The basics are: meat in different variations (kebab, pork etc ), vegetables: tomatoes, cucumbers in different salads, which were actually the same, but had different names....lol
The Cathedral of Varna
by mirchica
TheCathedral is the largest and most famous Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in the Bulgarian Black Sea port city of Varna, officially opened on 30 August 1886. It is the residence of the bishopric of Varna and Preslav and one of the symbols of Varna.
Primarily materials from the vicinity of Varna were used for the construction of the cathedral. Stones from the destroyed fortified walls of the city were collected, material for the façade was brought from the neighbouring villages of Lyuben Karavelovo and Kumanovo, the inner columns were made of local stone. The outer columns under the windows used stone from Rousse and the arches relied on limy freestone. Copper plates for the roof, as well as elevating gear to lift the blocks of stone, were brought from England

Starting from the Cathedral passing through the Dramatic Theatre and Nezavisimost square/ meaning "Independance"/ , "Knyaz Boris I"street and turning right by Slivnitsa to pass the Festival Complex -"FK" and taking you all the way to the sea garden and the sea promenade ....A great place to do some shopping or just wander the streets and enjoy a coffee or a meal in the countless restaurants or coffee houses.
You can even buy a furcoat in the middle of the summer :))

The gem of the Bulgarian Black Sea is situated at the end of the big Varna Bay, with a convenient and well conserved water area. The city's peculiar sea charm is sublime and moving. Ancient, medieval, renaissance and modern cultures mingle and coexist throughout the city. Varna lies on the same latitude of the famous Atlantic resorts Bayonne and Biarritz in France, on a large, flat and high terrace on the northwestern most curve of the bay which juts some 7 km inland. During the holiday season, July and August, the sunshine allows 10-11 hours of sunbathing. There is nothing of the cold Baltic wind or the summer Riviera heat. The sea is amazingly calm and free of dangerous tides.
Apart from being a beach resort, Varna rivals the great cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, in its offering of cultural attractions and historical buildings, museums and art galleries. It also provides access to some of the quieter scenic spots along the coast, including the nature reserve of Kamchiya, the royal palace of Balchik and the hillside monastery of Aladzha...
Varna is an 'around-the-year' holiday destination. Beyond the high Season its balneotherapy facilities can help you unwind and enjoy the many sights and sounds in peace.
