Croatian coast is in my humble opinion one of the most beautifull corners of europe. On the coast the Korcula island is supposedly the birthplace of Marco Polo.

Re: hi

ive been reading up on "Korcula". this is definately on my to do list when i hit dubrovnik.

George you will love Dubrovnik. We were there in 2005. Think about taking the ferry from the old town wharf to Cavtat a beautiful village less than an hour away. We took the local bus wghich was good.

When dining in Croatia , ask for dinner cooked in the bell. Must order usually 5 or 6 hours in advance, photos on my Dubrovnik and Plitvic Nat park pages.

Good Luck,
Mike

just got back last week. had a fantastic time. we also went further down the coast to a couple of places in montenegro. stunning scenery.

dubrovnik is a very clean, friendly town. the restaurants and bars very reasonable. the food was actually gorgeous in all the places we eat.

we booked our apartment with dubrovnikapartmentsourse.com. no complaints the apartment was gorgeous with a very nice sea view.

thanks mike. was a really good trip. was a breath of fresh air to be in a country with genuinly friendly people and no beggers with their hands out every 5 steps! haha.

Travel Tips for Dubrovnik

Living with history

by TheWanderingCamel

For all the beauty of Dubrovnik, perhaps its greatest charm lies in the way it is still a living, breathing city. Tourists may flood the main streets that are lined with wonderful examples of Renaissance and Baroque buildings but Dubrovnik is no sterile museum piece. You only have to walk a few yards away from the main thoroughfare to find yourself in streets of houses where people live and work, children and kittens play and old ladies sit and gossip under lines of washing stretched overhead. Walk the walls of Dubrovnik and you will find yourself looking right into houses and down on gardens and down at the harbour there are people swimming from the rocky outcrop under the city's walls.

Through Carol's Artist Eye

by tpal

I write a lot about wanting to be "slow travelers", taking time to immerse ourselves into the places we visit; to become, in some small way, a part of rather than a spectator to these wonderful locations.

We are definitely not there yet but we are trying. We stay longer in one place when we can. We always visit the local markets. We seek out the places where the locals eat, and, we try to spend at least part of the time not worrying about what's around the next corner or what sights we might miss.

One of Carol's opportunities occurs when she takes a painting break. Usually she will find a comfortable spot with an interesting view and just become a part of the background action. I usually wander off and experiment with my camera. It's often the only time I have to take as much time as I want to set up that perfect shot...without testing Carol's patience.

Intro Photo: This little boy was much more interested in the painting of Dubrovnik's Old Harbor than the harbor itself. Carol is definitely part of the action for the moment.

Photo 2: This little guy didn't care that much about Carol's artistic ability, but he sure put a smile on her face.

Photo 3: The artist's eye often focuses on that which is less obvious. Here Carol sees the Fort of St. John keeping vigil less on the old harbor than on the stucco homes and clay roofs of the cascading down the hillside.

Photo 4: Here Carol has found a shady spot and a bit of isolation while she captures a point in time.

Photo 5: The result is a view from a stone terrace just outside the Ploče Gate capturing the complexity of the old port.

Take water or regrett it

Daypack with your bottle or two of semi-frozen water Light clothes and extremely comfy shoes. Remember the sunglasses and hat Sunblock and remember to put it on regularly and do not forget the lipblock Bring lots, much to shoot

Cavtat

by grkboiler

Cavtat is a small town about a half hour from Dubrovnik by bus. It has a nice harbour and a path that goes along the water with some great views. Take bus #10 from the main bus station in Dubrovnik. If it is raining, you will be in for a long and scary bus ride up on the narrow mountain roads.

OUR FIRST NIGHT

by DPando about Strolling

As it were wount (and Dubrovnik was not an exception) just arrived for a long and weary journey for 7 hours by coach from Split we made it to Dubrovnik, we met face to face with my "dear" old ladies asking for place to rest...my french travelmates accept the deal and we went to a private house closer to central station..when we get there, mmmmm, "thats not confortable, we said each other" it was just a double room for 3 guys (lol) and woman wanted to bargain with us what was the best price...but it didnt really matter 12 or 10€ ..it was really uncomfortable per 3 and we came back to the station with the challenge to find out where was the YH...people told nasty remarks and comments about it ..but they just were dealers and tried to their business

So my advice is run out from there and slope up till the YH ...be aware with the street signs cos its not clear...going up steps and so on
