A green oasis of a huge garden full of flowers, fruit trees and vegetables, a terrace shaded by grapevines, a dog named Basra, and a genuinely warm welcome from Tony, the "concierge" of this family-run guest house - all tucked behind a high stone wall in complete peace and privacy not 2 minute's walk from the busy bayside road of Dubrovnik's main port area of Gruz The accommodation is simple but spotlessly clean. Rooms are quite small but more than adequately furnished with wide, comfortable beds and crisp white sheets. There were 4 in our party, 2 of us in a small apartment with a private bathroom and a kitchen, the others in seperate bedrooms with a shared bathroom. This arrangement meant we could prepare meals to eat under those grapevines, which was very pleasant. Dubrovnik's main Green Market is just around the corner whilst the Tommy supermarket was a couple of minute's walk in the other direction and whether you have a kitchen arrangement or not, all guests are welcome to bring their own food back with them and use the barbecue and the terrace. Rates do not include breakfast but you can order this meal seperately.
Our stay at the Bokun Guesthouse could not have been more enjoyable. Tony speaks excellent English and was most obliging and helpful, the garden was a delight, the terrace a place where guests felt free to gather and while away the evening eating and talking together. The location is great, the old city is just a short bus ride away - or a pleasant half hour walk. The place is so secluded and yet everything is right on the doorstep. Booking well in advance is advisable, the place is deservedly very popular, and since getting a mention in a French guidebook things have got even busier. Just one word of caution - if you like to dry yourself on something larger than a teatowel, find room in your luggage for a bath towel. I don't know what it is about Croatia, but here at the Bokun, as just about everywhere else in the country, the towels were tiny! | | | | Dubrovnik Bed and Breakfast: Unbeatable location, beatable price | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Dubrovnik Bed and Breakfast is located in a restored medieval house about 15 meters from the Ploce Gate of the old city. We booked two rooms on the third floor, which offered amazing views of the bay and the old town. The rooms were very simply furnished, but clean and comfortable. Our two rooms shared an en-suite bathroom. We booked this room in advance via the Internet. The owner picked us up at the Dubrovnik airport and drove us into town, which was a big plus, considering how expensive Croatian taxis are. He also gave us a short tour of the old city, complete with rather emphatic recommendations of where we should eat, what ice cream was best, what shops were rip-offs, and so on. This was mildly helpful, but we didn't feel that we were getting a truly objective viewpoint! We loved the location of this place, but the price was quite high for the quality of the room. We paid almost as much for this place as we had paid for a much nicer hotel in Zagreb. The owner was also rather insistent on being paid, in cash, on the first day of our stay. He actually escorted us to the ATM machine to get the money. It was a little unnerving.
The name is pretty misleading--Dubrovnik Bed and Breakfast does not, in fact, offer breakfast! However, it was very easy to buy a fine and inexpensive breakfast right downstairs--there's an excellent cafe on the first floor of the building, and a small grocery store right across the street where you can buy fruit, bread, cheese, yogurt, and anything else you might want. | | | | Private Room: Where's the heat!? | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When I arrived in Dubrovnik at the main bus station I was greeted by a slightly crazy looking lady offering me a room at her house. Since it was the off-season and there weren't any other offers being thrown my way, I decided to follow her and check it out. We boarded a bus and she took me to her house. Immediately, she made me some really good tea and introduced me to her cat. The house was only a ten minute bus ride from the Old Town and just one stop from the main bus station, so I decided to take her up on her offer.
That night I realized why I had only paid 80 kuna. It was freezing!!! The bed was nice and the room was quiet, but dang!!! Where was the heat? My shower the next morning was similarly frigid after the first minute or so of luke warm water. The funny thing was that this lady was a real salesperson. The next day, I went to Mostar, but she asked me all about my travel plans and when I arrived back in Dubrovnik a couple days later, she was there at the bus station waiting. She assumed I would be willing to stay with her again, but when I told her that I didn't want to, she started coming down on the price! I probably could have got a bed in her house for 60 kuna if I was willing to deal with the cold again.
