Dubrovnik hotel--help choose

by uwis66

We will be in Dubrovnik for 3 nights in September 2005. We are trying to decide among three 5-star hotels: (1) Excelsior, (2) Hilton Imperial (opening late '04), and (3) one of the properties within the Grand Villa Argentina complex. Can someone please help our decision?

Also, if you recommend the Argentina, please be specific about which of its properties -- Villa Argentina, Villa Glavic, Hotel Argentina, or Villa Orsula. We're having trouble determining the differences among these!

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the Hilton, which has opened/ is about to open since my departure. I've stayed in both the Excelsior and Argentina, and can recommend both - they're side-by-side, but the former is a bit more up-market. A further alternative, where I've also stayed, is the Villa Dubrovnik, smaller, slightly further away from the old city (but still walking distance), and very comfortable. This would be my choice.

There's a legend.........

There's a legend.........

All those fortresses in the city wall were built for defense from Turks.....only one was never used for this purpose cause the Turks weren't danger anymore when it was finished....so it actually couldn't fulfill its purpose...until the end of 20th century...when people were using it as a shelter when Serbs were bombing the city of Dubrovnik...so finally the fortress was used as it was meant to be: to protect the inhabitants of its city...

A walk on the Stradun

by DanielF

Like in all Mediterranean city, a stroll on the main street in the old town (Stradun) is a must for Dubrovnikans of all ages every afternoon when the weather is fine. Of course, today, they have to share their room with the ever increasing number of tourists that flood the town every Summer.

Kolocep, Elafiti islands near Dubrovnik (photo by Kora again).

Most people miss this wonderful small island in front of Dubrovnik. Not a single car there, not even a road, just the natives and the sea...

Dubrovnik to Cavtat

by jono84

There are good links from Dubrovnik to most of the surrounding islands from the Jadrolinija ferry landing in Gruz (western part of the city), although to get to Cavtat (the beautiful town i was staying in, further east), you had to catch a ferry from the Lokrum ferry dock in the Old Town's harbour, near Ploce Gate.

Tickets normally cost around 60KN return, and journeys take place atleast 3times daily. If leaving from Cavtat, there are more frequent ferries to Dubrovnik, and it is commonplace to get handed leaflets from allsorts of small companies running boats to the city.

Getting there is never a problem or really a major expense, but just make sure you take note of the return times before leaving.

A bus is another, slightly more rattling alternative to getting to and from Dubrovnik from Cavtat or vice versa. The views are pituresque over Zupski Bay, and the journey is only 20km. Bus no.10 runs hourly, and tickets are reasonable.
