Going up the wall
You must go up onto the wall and circle the city if you are physically able. This is a fantastic experience. Cost is 30 Kuna Croatian, which is less than $US10. Views... From every point the views are spectacular.

I am arriving on a Cunard ship in October. Can I get to the City Wall and Old City without a guide?
Some cruise ships anchor in the Bay and passengers are ferried ashore by tender.
Your ship is likely to dock at the Port of Gruz, about 3kms from the old Town. It will probably provide a free shuttle bus into Dubrovnik. If not there is a regular bus service from the Port into town. Be aware that there are sometimes many cruise ships arriving on the same day and the old town gets very crowded.
It is a fascinating destination - enjoy your visit.
oh yes you can with ease. I guess you will arrive in the Gruz harbour, you can get bus 1a, 1b and 3 to the Pile gate, a simple bus terminal. You can get on the walls there. see this website for your bus info

Should not be any trouble at all with the bus provided by either the ship or the public bus that drops you off just outside the main gate.
Doing the wall walk is a must - just after you enter the old town, you go through a courtyard and then into the city. Turn left and you will see steps going up to the wall - you pay on a landing partway up. You don't have to go all the around as there are some areas that will drop you back into the city.
The views are great from the wall.
Your ship will have a shuttle service into town. It is the easiest way to make this short 15 minute drive. You will have to check with Cunard if it is free or they charge a fee, not all shuttles are free these days. Also the local bus will transport you, the cost is 10 Kuna, no foreign currency. Ships shuttle is easiest as it goes directly to the old town with no stops.
Enjoy your limited time in Dubrovnik.
i got the ships shuttle bus in to the old town and walked back, about 45 mins but a lovely walk. the wall is fantastic to walk around.

The intact city walls, which run uninterrupted for 1940 metres encircling the city, is the most recognizable feature of Dubrovnik and gives it its characteristic appearance famous all over the world. This structure, which is one of the most beautiful and strongest fort system in the Mediterranean, consists of a series of forts, bastions, casemates, towers and detached forts. The fact that the city was able to resist the Saracens who besieged the city for fifteen montjs in the 9th century means that it was fortified well.
The whole city was enclosed by walls in the 13th century , except for the Dominican Monastery, which came under their protection only in the 14th century. The average thickness of the wall was 1,5 metres, and was built of stone and lime. TO BE CONTINUED
Be sure to take a little daypack with you in case you decide to go to an island for a day, or into Montenegro. You definitely need to take good walking shoes. You also need some beach wear if you're going in the summer months. (Unless you want to go nude, of course, but I would still suggest shoes and a beach towel.) It is fairly mild in the winter months, but on some evenings I still required my coat-although not my hat and gloves. You will find plenty of photo stores inside the castle. Kodak even has its own store where I was able tp buy a rare type of battery for my camera. Most of the beaches are pebble beaches so keep that in mind when you are packing your beach gear. And don't forget your sunscreen or you will most certainly burn.
Don't expect great beaches. But, after burning in the sun along the city walls, all the water is welcome, and the coast around the town provides several beaches. Well, the possible beaches, but all with great views.
(When I remember my swim in Vodice, I must confess that this, in a pebble beach, was... SUPER.)
The main axis through the Old Town is a great place to go and sit on one of the wicker chairs at one of the numerous bars and just observe all the people walking past. From about 5pm the average age of people seemed to go up, with socializing school kids and teens, (all well-behaved) at the beginning to older grown-ups and tourists later on. The Stradun(as with all the Old Town) has no cars running through it and if you spend a few days here you are quite likely to see someone more than once, be it a fellow plane passenger, or the young friendly girl showing you the menus of what must be her family's own restaurant. There is no apparent dress code, but it's a smart little town, so people who do look scruffy stand out!
