Camp Marina in Ropa: shaded with olive trees
Small campground in Ropa is one of the three on Mljet, and this one looked the biggest of them all. The guy working at 'reception' said they have up to 150 people staying by them in the main season... maybe even more, but it is then already 'walking one above eachother' - very crowded.
Only tents have place here, you'd hardly get camper to the terraces shaded lightly with olive trees and vines. Now after main season you could park the car by tent, but it didn't seem possible when it would be summer (see the second picture for view over one such terrace).
Price we paid in September 2010 (2 people, a car and a tent): 100 KN per day.
It was the only camp operating on Mljet (in September).
The place is okay in autumn, but I won't go there in summer - shade of the olive tree is modest, you'd roast yourself under merciless sun (temperature 30 degrees in mornings at 8 am!). If you come with small kids and wish to stay in camps, go to other one for your peace of mind.
Toilet has three showers, plus two toilets - the excrements there will be directly decomposed in a container under, using no water, but 'modern technology'. So, no waste will end up somewhere in the sea and no drop will be used to clean the toilet bowl, which is good... and it doesn't produce odor, it's almost completely ecologic. But if its crowded like in summer, then I guess you have to wait some time before it will be your turn for using sanitaries.
You can buy basic ingredients and some of their vegetable by their mini market directly, including olive oils and home grown wine.
Beach is 150 m away, steep path with stairs will take you from the rock till the bottom, but as I mentioned somewhere else, this is not very typical beach like you'd might expect... there are rocks, some places are easier to get to water, though. A little shade there in summer unless you're staying under tree upon cove.
Actually, in September is not too cold to sleep outside... we had quiet strong wind first two nights, so your tent needs to be tight strongly. There were maybe 5 tents altogether, sometimes more or less, it was very quiet. A hedgehog visited us each night, we also heard other animals from forest.
For our last night we met some young and older people who were staying in camp, we were sitting and chatting, drinking wine... which pissed off the owner, and about 1 am we were told to go to sleep. Ah, but we had so nice time before. I doubt they tell their guests in summer season to shut up, literally... I found that quite rude. I guess we weren't that loud. Whatever.

Autocamp Lovor: terraces with laurel
This autocamp is in small village Kozarica on Mljet Northern side in excellent shadow and surrounded by thick vegetation on the terraces where you'll pitch the tent.
Unfortunatelly it was closed by September but we were allowed to have a look, nevertheless. If we could, we'd prefer to stay here - there was no strong wind at the location, but it was also less sunny.
A road to Kozarica is winding and not entirely paved with asphalt. Two cars cannot meet, but there are niches where to give way to another vehicle. Some excellent views above wetlands and the sea will open as you drive towards Kozarica below.
Camp is at the edge of village, on terraced slope between pine forest and eel ponds and wetland. Not directly by the sea, but as you'll learn, no other camp on Mljet has that either. It's not far from the village, few minutes walk and you'll find somewhere to swim and eat. Or you'll go somewhere else on Mljet, there are excellent spots elsewhere.
One of the nicest things about the camp is abundace of laurel bushes everywhere, on each terrace. What an aromatic accomodation under the sky that is, laid upon gentle matress of leaves and red soil!
The toilets and showers are on the up-most terrace, there's also a parking place and maybe place for camper vans, though we didn't see anybody there - as said, it was closed in September and I hope next time we'll be able to update this information.
Anyways... my opinion is that it looked far better than one in Ropa, if it's windy it was sheltered naturally by slope and vegetation, if it's sunny it has shade from bushes and trees. It had more sanitaries, good places to pitch tents... just the road perhaps isn't the best one and it's in the remotest part of island and near the eel fields,a few kilometers from the main road on Mljet. I guess you must like all that if you want to enjoy your stay here as it is on very quiet place.
