Ferry to Hvar

by Djotaya

Hey everyone,

I would like to travel to Hvar in august by car and I have heard that there is much cheaper ferry from Makarska. Does any one have an advice which ferry is best and cheapest.

Thanks in avdance.

Though I know you would understand me if wrote in Serbian I am writing this post in English so everyone around the world could understand :D

As far as I can tell The only ferry from Makarska goes to Sumartin on Brac. Also, If there was a ferry to Hvar I don't see how it would be MUCH cheaper, it's almost the same distance. The ferry to Brac should be much cheaper it's about 1/5 the distance. Jadrolinja is the company that runs the ferries they don't show anything from Makarska to Hvar.

The ferry you're thinking of goes from Drvenik, not Makarska to Sucuraj, right at the other end of Hvar from Stari Grad and Hvar Town. It is a very short crossing and is cheaper, but you then have a 55km drive if you are heading for the other towns. The ferry makes several crossings a day but is not met by buses as the ferry to Stari Grad is, but is a good option if you have your own transport.

Travel Tips for Hvar

by hevbell

Visit Hvar town on the island of Hvar. The picture above shows the main square in the centre of the town. I loved the relaxed pace of life here. Sitting in the little outdoor cafes by the sea and shopping at the palm tree lined market place.

I had an interesting time - given I spoke no other languages at all at that age - trying to make conversation with one of the German girls in our hotel since there were no English speaking kids my age!

We also had an interesting encounter with a live turkey. Just walking around town, near our hotel, we heard a really weird noise and looking up spotted a turkey sitting on a balcony which was little more than a lump of concrete sticking out the wall of one of the many unfinished houses! Gave us the fright of our lives!

Where to sonbathe

You'd rather make the effort of taking every day a small boat (there are pleinty in front of hotel Adriatica, every 10 min) to one of the small uninhabited islands in front of HVAR. You can get there wonderfull quiete times, and there are small woodden restaurants on each of them: Jerolimo is teh best. But they are all (7) wonderfull!!!!!!!!!!!

down an unmarked trail, pt 1....

by marktynernyc

The only way to reach Dubovica is down an unmarked trail. A bus ticket from Hvar Grad to Dubovica is 9kn. It takes about 15 minutes but is worth the effort. A wondeful secluded cove with a pebbled beach, one restaurant and if you want, a place to rent a room.

An alternative route

by TheWanderingCamel

An alternative to the Split-Stari Grad ferry to Hvar is the little shuttle ferry from Drvenik (on the mainland, south of Split) to Sucuraj (at the eastern tip of Hvar.) It does mean you'll have a 50km drive along a very narrow and winding road from Sucuraj to the other end of Hvar where most of the island's accommodation can be found, but the crossing itself is both shorter and, at 10KN and 70KN this summer for passengers and cars respectively, cheaper.

Check the website here for sailing times.

If you are touring in Croatia, this crossing gives you the alternative of leaving the mainland at one place and returning to another. It wouldn't be a very convenient crossing without your own transport as Sucuraj, your point of arrival on Hvar, is a very small town and getting away from there could be quite difficult.

Slow Food member.....

by marktynernyc about Golden Shell

09/06 - Ivo's Golden shell salad, cloud-like gnocci with walnut sauce and his lamb with Robinson sauce will keep bringing me back to Hvar. A great restaurant with superb quality food.

09/05 - Ivo is still serving great food - my friend and I started off with salads and then order whole grilled fish - scorpino and orada. A bottle of red plavic rounded out the meal. Will be back again next year.

09/04 - Started with dumplnigs lasagana - gnocci with a walnut sauce subtley flavored with dried herbs, really good. Rabbit in Hvar sauce with olives, a fresh salad with goat cheese ( I could eat one of these every day) and the house red - all wonderful. His spin on drunken figs was a nice finish to a wonderful meal. Ivo remembered me from my last visit - next time I'll leave the decisions to him.

09/03 -The owner is a member of Slow Food. Started off with dalmation ham and goat cheese in olive oil, for entree a steak stuffed with goat cheese and capers with a side order of swiss chard and potatoes - ordered a bottle of Zlatan Otok red. Everything was well prepared The owner is very personable. I realized half way back across the Atlantic that dumplings on the menu probably meant ravioli (doh!). Would have like to have gotten back here for another meal - next year.
