Nice....but expensive

During our three night stay we booked into the Podstine Hotel. In the summer you pay a lot for the conevnience of a private beach type area and 3 star amenities. Even at 130 euros this place was fully booked out with mainly Germans and Italian tourists. Though there were a few brits among us. We had the cheapest room which was tastefully decorated but the others had private balconys facing the sea if you could afford it. Breakfast was served in the restaurant which also had a nice outdoor patio area. There were supposedly enough sun beds for every person att the hotel but I have a sneaky suspicion that folks from the private accomadations nearby were also using the facilities. Nonetheless we were never left wanting. The beach area has actually been cemented over but there are step leading into the sea. The water around the hotel is clean and perfect for swimming and snorkelling. They even have a diving out fit attached which we didn't use. The bar/cafe and restaurant were fine and a welcome to get out of the hot summer sun. The hotel's marketing material will tell you that the hotel is a 10 - 15 min walk to the centre of Hvar town but its actually 20 minutes and I walk pretty fast though we found it never taking more than 25 mins even if you take a really leisurly stroll. The walk is flat and goes along the coast so its not unpleasant at all and the return leg allows you to walk off your evening meal. We never used the restaurant preferring to wander into town for food but it looked OK and we did see that they offered a Dalamtion evening one night. I suspect a tour group was in on that occasion though!

Service was fine though at times a little indifferent as we were left wondering if we were being a nuisance by staying at the hotel. Considering the price you pay I expected a lot more. Though there's nothing wrong with Podstine and given the competition this is perhaps as good as things get unless you manage to get your hands on a nice appartment.

Taxi Boats around Hvar

by tepuia

WE are experienced travellers and this was not our first trip to Croatia.
Hvar Water Taxi run by Luca, be weary of the name, this guy is a rip off merchant. This is a modern enclosed cabin 6 - 8 seater boat on an inflatable base ( rubber duckie). Get everything in writting prior to your trip, even if the booking is made through the hotel which ours was. The quote was in kuna and when it came to paying for the trip he said he quoted in euro which changed the cost markedly. The police were of no help and neither was the Hotel Podstine that made the booking, infact the receptionist just happened to be a friend of the boat driver/owner.We had to cut our stay short because Luca employed thugs to intimidate us for the rest of our stay. The quoting of kuna and the charging in euro is also relatively common in resturants and we know of others who have been caught out this way.

I'm not a diver, but there is a dive shop next to Hotel Podstine (on the east side, down the stairs to the beach) that was advertising first time dives. I can't recall the name of the place though.
