Car Hire in Stari Grad

by yvex

My wife and I are travelling to Hvar from Split in September this year and wonder if it is possible to hire a car in Stari Grad or should we hire it in Split? We are staying in Vrboska and would like the freedom of having our own transport. Thanks.

As it's September you shouldn't have a problem getting a car of some sort in either Stari Grad or Hvar Town from a local car hire outfit - I won't guarantee what you'll get - and, yes, you will definitely need a car if you're staying in Vrboska. Booking a car may be a different proposition - the companies you can use for on-line booking will all charge you a premium for delivering a car to Hvar. You should check the cost of that against the cost of taking the car on the ferry.

Vrboska's lovely, we stayed there a couple of years ago and loved it - I'm envious!

Travel Tips for Hvar

Property Agency

I was looking at all those houses and wondered if I could ever affort one. And I found a very good website, right here, in an Internet cafe. Those people, after you tell them your price range, show you around the houses you might like. I just took the excursion, nothing more. I don't have enough money yet, but the houses were beautiful. They got a large database of houses around the island. Have a look at:

Backpack for daytrips. Bring light luggage and bags as it could get quite tricky boarding the ferries and you have to carry your own luggage Comfortable shoes, light clothing and do not forget the swim wear. Do not forget the sunscreen as the sun here is extremely harsh. Swimming goggles would be nice to if you like snorkling. Do not forget your prescription medicine and a all purpose anti-biotic. Ensure you have enough battery power for your digital & camcorder. Even when going on day trips ensure enough film is with you, even carry an additional one just in case!

Vis town

A quiet sleepy town where nothing much was happening. I found the shops small with few items, although the jewellery shop had some lovely items in it. We saw very few people around even whilst walking amongst the houses.

Zavala

by mircaskirca

On the southern coast of the island facing the open sea is a small fishing village Zavala. It is located on the local road that goes from Jelsa. If you come from Stari Grad (as we did) in Jelsa you turn right onto a narrow curvy road via Pitve and then through a narrow and dark tunnel (1400 m long). The tunnel is regulated with traffic light because it's so narrow that two cars can't pass each other.

Zavala is a picturesque and tranquil village on a slope by the sea embraced by the scents of lavender and rosemary, and surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. The village is famous for its excellent white wine bogdanuša. The village has a harbour with a jetty, a few beach bars, small restaurants and a shop. Worth having a look is the summer residence of the family Duboković-Nadalini (from about 1830) with the chapel of St. George.

Below the village are some most beautiful pebble beaches and several small coves with crystal clear water where you can enjoy in tranquility, away from the crowds. The most attractive beach is at Petraščica (with a cave). Spending a day on a little island of Scedro is also nice. In Zavala you can stay in private accommodation (villas and apartments). Many of them are beautifully situated above the beach. If you enjoy untouched nature and peace you'll love it here.

Situated about a block off the main square and near Hektorovica's unfinished house - this is one of the more upscale restaurants. The food quality is excellent. I did the chef's recommendations - hvar sampler plate of fish pate-octopus salad- marinated anchovies, fruta di mare risotto, fish fillet w/roasted vegetables. Ordered a bottle of white - Bodanjusa. For desert - a couple slices of fresh succulent watermelon. Try and get a table outside along the walkway - the lights swaying in the breeze, people passing by - makes for a wonderful setting. Finished with some homemade prosec - which was a deep ruby red. I had my last dinner here - lobster spaghetti (140 kn), other white fish (120 kn), grilled vegetable (25 kn) a 1/2 liter of house white (30 kn) - once again a beautiful peaceful setting - late at night I had the walkway to myself.
