You will find ferry information here:

http://www.venezialines.com/eng/index.asp

Ferries from Venice do not go to Split but to other locations in Croatia.

Ferries from Ancona and Pescara go to Split, but mainly in the summer months.

The Ancona>Split ferry operators year-round are

You should try your best to go

Split and all of Croatia is one great destination

Allow yourself a few good days at least if not a week or two and then visit some of the fantastic islands easily from Split or Dubrovnik.

There used to be a ferry service between Venice and Dubrovnik which was a great trip in itself tho not sure anymore if this is still operating or if there's one going directly to Venice.

Hello,

the best way (to my mind) to travel is by car. You can visit all the places you want. There are many pretty villages around.
I suggest you to start your trip from Split. Go here http://www.decodecarhire.co.uk/car-hire/croatia/split.html for car hire Split. They have reasonable prices for good cars. Drive around to enjoy the local food and beverages (you can go to restaurants in Split or go around to eat in some villages). And then you can go to Dubrovnik (on your way back) - it's about 3-4 hours ride. In October it's quite cool, but you can enjoy the landscapes (which are really scenery).
So have a nice trip!
If you have any questions, I'll be glad to help you :)

Travel Tips for Split

Get lost in the old town

by FRONA

Split city center/Old town is a must see, every street is important, just try and let go, get lost in there and discover the old heart of this magnificent city.
At Podstrana near Split, you can rest in the peace and quiet of private accommodation right by the sea. The Split Riviera is six kilometres of beautiful pebble beach and tamarisk. Thousands of beds are available in the highest quality accommodation; many houses have the beach close by and there is a rich choise of restaurants and places to eat. The climate

Hajduk football stadium

by yumyum

The Hajduk football club was founded in 1911 in a restaurant in Prague. In 2011 it will have it's 100 years jubilee and the club has never changed its name. The club is very successful and has seen countries come and go like the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and Yugoslavia.

The fans of the Hajduk football club are called Torcida. In 1950 some fans decided to support their club like the Brasilians did in Brazil. Torcida became a mass movement and the Yugoslavian regime didn't like it at all and banned it. But Torcida is back strong as ever.

The stadium is called Poljud and fits 34'448 seats.

When we visited the stadium was closed and I saw someone going in, so I thought we just do the same. Well, there is security but we asked politely to have a quick look which was granted after an initial "no".

The passage leading into the stadium brought us along a photogallery of the old days history. Looking up in the hall displayed some trophies and we passed the football shoes library. There is a fan shop at the stadium but it was closed when we were there. Another fan shop is located in the center of Split in a side street of Marmontova. Coming from the harbour up the Marmontova it's in a side street to the right somewhere after the fish market.

Olive Tree

by canaglic

The old olive tree in Kastel Stafilic (town of Kastela) is a protected nature sight. It has a very attractive habitus and is estimated to be 1,500 years old. Most probably it originates from south Italy or Greece, because it belongs to a sort which doesn't exist in these areas which makes it a specific curiosity.

The Buses

by biggeorge

You can pick up the buses from by the train station , grab the conductor and he'll stuff your bags in the hold for a little extra cash. The buses go everywhere from Zagreb to Sarajevo and they are extremely clean and cheap.

Celebrities fav place

by FRONA about JUGO

Its overlooking the marina, favorite place for local music stars. Its cosy, a lot of light, friendly and clean.. I like the aquarium in the room. What makes it special is that if you come here regularly you will be able to get signatures from local pop stars. WHen I was there, the next table was empty. After a few minutes one of the most famous Croatian singers called Giboni sat next to us! Fresh sea food, squid or calamari from the grill, fresh and not frozen!

Good house wine too.
