Diocletian's Palace and Old Town
by acemj
Though Split is Croatia's second largest city next to Zagreb, it's not very difficult to navigate as a traveler. Most of the most interesting sights are located within a relatively small area loosely confined to the Old Town and the Diocletian's Palace and I found that walking was by far the best way to see the sights.
Mestrovic Gallery
by blanter
This is the Summer resudence of Ivan Mestrovic, the greatest Croatian artist of XX century and arguably the only world-famous one. It contains about a 100 sculptures of him, in bronze, marmor and wood. In my opinion, the sculptures are amazing. We spent there an hour (totally alone - the Gallery does not seem to attract too many visitors) and would gladly spend more. Nearby, there is Castelet - the villa Mestrovic bought and which is supposed to have his bas-reliefs, but it was closed at the time of visit.
Open 10-15 except Monday. Ivana Mestrovica 46, west of the center (about 20-30 minutes walk).
Nice Italian/Croatian shoes
by FRONA about KARLA
Its a shop where any woman can find shoes of her choice: modern or just classy. One of my favorite stores because they have very modern design at good prices. Pay special attention to the times when they have sales! I bought croco lookalike skin shoes discounted from HRK 1200 to 500! Karla has a number of stores around Split and its worth to find out where they are because mostly they carry different collections!
By train to Split
by yumyum
Just by the harbour there is a small dead-end railway station called "Split". Apart from some local trains to Solin etc. there are also a few connections to Zagreb. The station building is quite modern with a ticket counter and an electronic departure board but the funny thing is that there is no timetable hanging anywhere in the station. We couldn't find one inside nor outside on the platforms.
Since the long-distance bus station is just outside the train station you will find all important facilities like left-luggage, toilets, internet, snacks and drinks etc. just nearby.
Lots and lots of cakes
by BlueLlama about Bobis
I wish I could agree with the other VT reviews of Bobis - I wasn't too impressed!
The shops are inviting - to those with a sweet tooth like me, at any rate - with more cakes, biscuits and chocolate-covered things than you can shake a stick at. So in we went and after much indecision chose two different cakes to take away, both of which looked absolutely gorgeous.
Both, however, turned out not only to taste of very little, but to taste almost identical. Lots of (not fresh) cream and sweet sponge. Maybe we should have asked the recommendation of the very charming people behind the counters, seeing as how popular these places seem to be!
You can eat in with or without a hot drink or take away and prices are good for the big portions you get. I couldn't finish my slice. Worth trying to see a Split institution, but not wonderful.
