2 or 3 days in Split? Any tips please

by jonathanbarker

Dober dan

My friend and I are visiting Split, arriving by train in the morning of Wednesday the 28th October, and hopefully have at least two days or maybe three days leaving by ferry or train on either Thursday or Friday (29th or 30th).

Both of us enjoy train travel, good (local) food and beer, and maybe meet up with local people for a walking tour.

We are staying in a hostel.

What would you recommend for a good day out by train please.

Puna hvala

Train travel is not that extensive in Dalmatia and Split is the "end of the Line" -- trains do not go anywhere farther south. Trogir is a good place to visit from Split, you get there by bus if you don't have a car.

Hi,
When you arrive in Zagreb from train station to main square is second stop with tram no.6 or you can just walk 5 minutes. There on the right hand side is tourist board of town Zagreb. They are the best to tell you what is good to see in few hours. Up town walking is very nice.
I would take bus 1 hour on your way to Split and stop in Plitvice national park., with water falls. Amaizing. Train doesn't stop there. From Plitvice is 3 hours by bus to Split, you will enjoy old town with streets like labirint.Climb on bell tower St. Duje the best wiev on Split. Marjan is place where local walking. Find info also in tourist board.Trogir 40 minutes by bus is nice small town good to see.
In Split is great place where local people eat and prices are good. For small meal 30 kuna big is 45. Place is Konoba Fife you can find it in google. Adress is Trumbiceva obala 11. You must try pasticada with meat.
Wish you great holidays.

Split is a wonderful place to wander, particularly along its backstreets. Not to be missed is the splendid Dicocletian's Palace, right on the waterfront, with its very intriguing catacomb-like interior, winding stone corridors, archways, and historic remnants everywhere. If you're interested in art, uphill from town (taxi ride, maybe walking) is the former home of renowned local sculptor Mestrovich. Along the waterfront are at least a dozen cafes and restaurants with a nice view. Don't miss the open-air market, where you can also buy good cheeses, olices, breads and fruits for a picnic. It's very picturesque. Enjoy!

Travel Tips for Split

Split, the Sister City of Los Angeles

by karenincalifornia

As an ex-Angelino, I find it interesting that Split and Los Angeles are sister cities. Sisters usually have some similarities - maybe there are some here....

Split was built right on a harbor.
Los Angeles originally wasn't on a harbor, but city boundaries were later extended to include the San Pedro Harbor.

Split is really old.
Los Angeles is, well, sort of old, if you consider 200 years old.

Split is at 43 degrees north latitude
Los Angeles is at 34 degrees north latitude.
Same numbers, just inverted

Diocletian retired to Split in 305 A.D.
Ronald Reagan retired to Bel Aire, an exclusive enclave in Los Angeles in the 1990s A.D.

Sounds like sisters to me.

Packing List

After Yugoslavia. A book by Zoe Bran is great reading, either before or during your trip. Lots of information and history, both recent and long ago, I found it helped me to understand the region. Easily the best travel book I've read lately. It's published by Lonely Planet.

The AGAVA plant

by FRONA

Very typical to the area is the AGAVA plant whose closest description can go under the family of aloe vera plant. This example is the form that you can see all along the coast of Croatia and unfortunately I can not find more on the characteristics of this sort. I remember from childhood that they smell wonderfully when in bloom but that is not sucha great thing for them. Namely, when agava blooms, it means that its near the end of its life. I guess some things are ending and others begin...

To / From the Split Airport

by diocletianvs

Getting to and from the Split airport is not that problematic as it might seem at the first sight. There are Croatia Airlines buses that wait for you on arrivals of all Croatia Airlines flights and depart from the Obala Lazareta (in front od the Diocletian’s palace in Split) 1,5 hours before departures of their flights. The ticket costs 30 kunas.

OK, but what about other flights? Well, then you’re in trouble unless you know where to wait for the local bus since there’s no information about this at the airport. You may, of course, take a taxi that will cost you around 200 kunas to the center of Split.

Or you may use local Promet bus #37, that operates on Split – Trogir route and passes in front of the airport. Buses pass every 20 minutes (30 mins on Sundays and holidays) – to catch them just walk across the parking lot and through a small olive-grove. There you’ll see two (rather ugly looking) yellow bus shelters – and voila: wait at the side of the Airport if you intend to go to Trogir, or across the road if your destination is Split. For Trogir you’ll need 1-fare zone ticket (8 kunas one way), for Solin 2-zone ticket (10 kunas) and for Split 3-zone ticket (14 kunas) - tickets can be bought in the bus.

In Split buses arrive and depart from the local bus station situated at Sukoisanska street. If you don’t like walking, you can use the same ticket and catch any of the buses that pass Domovinskog rata street and lead either to Theatre square (HNK station: buses 1, 4 or 16) to Trznica (buses 2, 3, 9 and 10) or to the Ferry port (Trajektna luka: buses 2, 9 and 10).

Hard to find, but worth looking for

by travelmad478 about Kod Joze

Sure, we got this one out of the Lonely Planet, and it took us a lot of wandering around to find it. But the food was quite good, and there were a number of items that (amazingly) departed from the standard-issue Croatian menu. The shady outdoor terrace is a great place to sit. You know you're in the right place when the rest of the establishment is filled with Croatian businesspeople eating long lunches!
