Zagreb to Split

by lailing

Hi. What's the cheapest and quickest way to get to Split from Zagreb? Where can I get bus and train timetable in English? I'm flying in to Zagreb. Will I need to book the train/bus ticket in advance or can I get them on the spot? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Zagreb to Split

Timetable etc for buses here:

http://www.ak-split.hr/EN/index.html

There are quite a lot of buses.

Train times (not fares) here:

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml

The Croatian railway site is:

http://www.hznet.hr/

Click the tiny 'english' at the very bottom of the page. You need Zagreb Glavni Koldor station. Click on the 'timetable' link, or use the search box to get times and fares.

No need to book either in advance, imo. Train is slightly faster than bus, depending on train type/time, but will be more comfy.

The bus ticket Zagreb-Split is approx 25-30Euro, the trip takes about 5-6h (depends on the traffic; be careful to check if it's going via highway or "old road" as that's slower).Numerous buses throughout the day, every day. The train- 2 "fast" trains (6:50 a.m. and 15:22 p.m.), ticket is approx 25Euros. No need to book upfront, just buy the ticket as soon as you arrive to Zagreb.

The Zagreb Bus station has a lot of information:
http://www.akz.hr/
When I traveled to Trogir a few years ago i just went to the busstation and asked for the first bus. it was all quite easy. Now that the freeway is mostly finished it should even be faster, but make sure you get on a fast bus.

Hi

you could also fly with Croatia Airlines, if you book some weeks ahead, you normally can get ticket for around 50 Euro.

From Split Airport you can then take the airport bus (30 Kuna) to the centre of town.

Travel Tips for Split

Diocletian's Palace

by croisbeauty

Today, the well preserved Roman architecture is interlaced with several layers from later ages. The old core of the town, so-called Varos, is situated inside the walls of the palace which was of huge proportions and built in the shape of an fortress. Do not miss to visit the underground part of the Diocletian's Palace, so-called catacombas, with network of corridors where nowadays a number of galleries, souvenir shops and museum is situated.

Hidden away

by TheWanderingCamel

Hidden inside the Golden Gate of Split's Roman walls, the tiny church of St Martin occupies what was once a passage in the guardroom over the gate. Less than 2 metres wide and almost 10 metres long, . There seems to be some dispute over when it was converted into a church -most probably it was sometime in th 9th century although the inscription on the stone screen dates from the 11th century, and appropriately, it was dedicated to St Martin, the guardian saint of soldiers. Whenever it was, it is a remarkable little place, and visiting it is a real privilege.

Although there is a marker in the street outside, the church is normally only open on St Martin's Day - November 11. At other times, access is only by knocking on the door of the Dominican convent next door and asking the nun who will answer the door if you may see the chapel. Please be mindful of the fact that you are asking a favour of the nuns who have many other calls on their time - don't knock too early or too late in the day, or at lunchtime. If someone is available, you will ushered up the stairs beside the convent and in to the church. The chances are you will be the only visitor, so you can really appreciate the quiet beauty of this special little place with its ancient stone altar and screen, and room for only a handful of people at most.

Land of thousands cafe-bars

by croisbeauty about Everywhere in the city

One thing is for sure, you wont suffer thirst when visiting Split, there are thousands of cafe-bars virtualy everywhere in the city. It is the way of living here, the very first morning coffee stars in the nearest cafe-bar, locals meets each other here, they do business here and spend their free time again here. Cafe-bar is inevitable nightlife spot in Split. Most of the locals spend whole evenings and late night hours sitting in the cafe-bars, sipping their drinks, talking alot or just other people watching. It is also the meeting point or gathering place before going to dinner in some restaurant or dancing in one of the discoteques in outskirts of the town.

Local buses

by diocletianvs

Local transport is served by a network of buses with 20 lines within Split and an extensive network of interurban buses that provide fast links with surrounding towns of Solin, Kastela and Trogir on the north-west and Stobrec, Podstrana and Omis on the eastern side of the Split connurbation.
The area is divided into 4 fare zones, but if you intend only to travel within Split you'll be in the first zone. You'll find a map of fare zones here: www.promet-split.hr/zone.htm
Most of the bus routes pass through three main bus stops in center of town: "HNK" in front of the Theatre, "Trznica" close to the main open-market place and "Opcina" further to the north in Domovinskog rata street. Their intervals range from every 10 to every 30 minutes, depending on the line and time of the day. You'll find all schedules here: www.promet-split.hr/grad.asp

Single tickets are sold by drivers, but if you buy ticket for 2 rides at the Promet kiosks it will be cheaper per one ride.
The prices are: 8kn for a single (12kn for a double-ride ticket) for one zone, 10 (16,50)kn for 2-zones, 14 (21,50)kn for 3-zones and 18 (28,00)kn for 4-zones.
In all zones children up to 6 years can go for free, and between 6 and 10 years pay a children's ticket that costs 3kn.

One of my Split favourites

by tpk2 about Kalafatić

The place is called Caffe bar - Pizzeria Kalafatić and that's why a didn't really consider as an option for "real" restaurant eating. But was I surprised.. The restaurant on the second flor is one my favourites in Split! They serve anything from pizza to local fish and grill meals. And the food is really good. This is what I'd recommend for two persons:
Salada od Hobotnic (salad made of a special type of octopus)
Pašteta od Tunjevi (tuna paste)
Škampi-žar (shrimps)
Lingje na žaru-sez (cuttlefish)

And tiramisu for dessert.

This menu costs around 250 kuna.
