Riva cafes
by Enzyme_X
When you're tired of exploring the narrow streets of old town, come to the riva, on the Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda, and sit down in one of the many cafes along the street. This place is specially great in warmer months when you can sit outside, sunbathe, observe people passing by and enjoying your coffee.
Althoug there are many cafes right eachother it happend that we had problems finding a free table.
Can you pass me some salt, dear neighbour?
by diocletianvs
Some of the streets of the Old Town are so narrow that you can borrow salt from your neighbour across the street. Without the need of going to the street level and crossing the street. You just reach the other side of the street through the window on the 3rd floor.
Of course, this means that there are mostly no secrets – especially during the summer evenings when all the windows are open, and you can hear everything in the neighbour’s living room, smell the dinner from the neighbour’s kitchen or hear the alarm clock of that bus driver on the second floor that gets up every morning at 3.30 a.m.
HVAR - Hvar is the fourth...
by Kamen_mali
HVAR - Hvar is the fourth largest island at 182 square miles (300 square km). It is even sunnier than Brac. However, there is enough rain to keep the island green and to maintain the beautiful fields of lavender, rosemary, sage, marjoram and thyme and carefully cultivated vineyards. When in Hvar, you must purchase some lavender oil the major export of the island.
Of historical interest is that the oldest (prehistoric) relief of a ship in Europe was found here. Also, the oldest community theater was founded here in 1612. Other architectural and historic attractions include the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower, treasury and paintings by old masters, the unfinished palace of the poet Petar Hektorovic, and many other 'must-see' buildings.
The town of Stari Grad on Hvar was founded in 385 BC under the name of Pharos as a Greek colony. Attractions definitively include the remains of the Greek fortifications and the fortified castle of Petar Hektorovic with its ponds and arcades. The unique Fishing Museum and architectural harmony of Vrboska is also something that will attract visitors' attention. Hvar is, no doubt, an exceptional island, both in summer and winter. Due to its mild winter climate and rich subtropical vegetation, it has also been called the Croatian Madeira.
When in town Hvar you must visit: the town’s main square, the cathedral of St. Sephan, the Franciscan monastery, the Hektorovic palace, the summer residence of Hanibal Lucic ….
Airport bus
by yumyum
There are 3 different buses to the airport:
1. The Croatia Airlines bus: For the timetable you need to go to the airline office in town to find out.
2. The local bus no. 37 that takes you to Trogir will stop right by the airport. It leaves from Sukoisanska.
3. The private airport bus which costs 30 Kuna and leaves from the same spot as the Croatian Airlines bus ie at the beginning of the Riva in front of the restaurant there sort of opposite the Green Market. For the timetable you will have to go the the tourist agency on the Riva, the timetable is hanging in their window or just ask the drivers when you check out the spot and a bus is there.
Great Little Find - Good Food and Good Value
by bev060 about Black Cat Bistro
Generous servings in a pleasant environment with nice service. Not gourmet but really good value for good food. We eat a variety of different ethnic foods at home so having a change from Croatian style food was great. Wine list limited but nice choices at reasonable prices. Chris, the owner, very friendly and provided us with some travel hints. He is good with his staff and it shows in their mannerisms.
We highly recommend this restaurant for a dinner in Split.
