hmmm... train Munich to Ljubljana, then bus (overnight) Ljubljana to Split? Will be quite a long journey!
Or train Muich - Zagreb and train or bus Zagreb to Split. Train is more comfotrable - but still...it's a long way.

Train, Bus and Plane are all options. What you take depends on what your preferences are and what you are prepared to pay.
Personally I am the kind of person that is prepared to pay to avoid bursting a blood vessel because of the security theatre now omnipresent at the airports. So I would:

- Take the day train Split - Zagreb. This is a great ride BTW.
- Take the night train Zagreb - München.

Or.

_ Take the night train Split - Zagreb.
- Take a day train Zagreb - München.

Total price would be 139,- plus reservations.

i once took late afternoon bus from Zagreb to Split in winter and it was so much snow in Gorski kotar that arrival was delayed for 4 or 5 hours.

Train ride is nice, yes...

I can understand your insurance problem. Otherwise, as other have written, there is absolutely no problem driving with foreign plates in ex-Yu, borders (sometimes many!) are usually a matter of 5 minutes, safety is the same than in other European countries or may be even safer. We have been often in Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia with french plates and everything went always smooth.

Travel Tips for Split

Check out the old town centre

by hansjarle

Lot of small alleys and tiny streets will take you around the incredible historcal buildings in the old centre of Split. Nice food in the hidden restaurants around inside the old centre, all of them with a fantastic atmosphere.

The summer months can be brutally hot here in Split, but the winter is relatively mild. I was here in February and it was pleasant in the daytime, and pretty cold at night (0 -10 degrees celsius or so).

The Old Town streets are old and sometimes you'll find uneven pavement, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes. Of course, you'll want to bring your favorite photo equipment. An almost 2000 year old Old Town, a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and a beautiful bay are all worth your camera's attention.

by Kamen_mali

MEDJUGORJE – Medjugorje is a world famous sentuary, where people come with great faith and praires. Since June 24, 1981., when six visionaries together with the pastor at that time Fr. Jozo Zovko gave testimony for the first time about Our Lady’s apparition, Medjugorje has not ceased attracting pilgrims from all parts of the world.
The Shrine of Medjugorje has 3 spiritual zones – the Church, the hill of Apparition and the Cross Mountain.

Split Airport

by grkboiler

Split Airport is a short ride from Old Town. If you have a flight, you can take the Croatia Airlines bus which leaves from a bus stop off Obala Lazareta near the harbour (not the main bus stop). Buses leave 90 minutes before each Croatia Airlines flight, so if you aren't flying Croatia Airlines make sure you know when the nearest flight time is to your airline.

A cheaper alternative to the Croatia Airlines bus is bus #37 from Sukoisanska, although it is not direct and makes stops before the airport.

Croatia Airlines has many flights to and from Split if you must travel through Zagreb. Flights are only an hour long and beat riding the bus for a whole day.

Korlavcko

by bluebug about Everywhere

Korlavcko beer is the popular tasty beer here. You'll find it at every cafe and restaurant in Croatia, (so i'm told). A panini, a beer, and my journal kept me satisfied while waiting for my ferry to depart.
