We wnnt to take car ferry to from Split to Hvar on Sept 1st Monday and then on Sept 4th go with car from Sucuraj to Drvenik. I cannot find it on the ferry schedule - is this possible and roughly what will cost be. i think I should book it ahead. Thanks so much
Yes, you need to book ahead but not necessarily from where you might be coming from unless of course you're already in the midst of Croatia or closer. It's hard to tell cause your page is totally empty with not even a sliver of personal info in it. Fill in some basic information about yourself and other VT members will be more forthcoming in answering your queries and sharing travel tips with you. Buy your ticket to the ferry once you arrive in Split, the ferry schedule is widely available there. There is a site somewhere you can go to but sorry that I don't have that for you at this point. The ferry goes to Stari Grad, not Hvar Grad, so make sure you note that.
jadrolinija is the main ferry operator--search at their site. The Sept 4 schedule may not be up yet, but you can look at last year's.

The usual practice with Jadrolinija is that you can't book ahead - you turn up at the ferry port on the day in plenty of time to catch the ferry and queue. It seems to work - we've never missed a sailing that we wanted.
The Sucuraj-Drevnik is a very small one that shuttles back and forh every couple of hours. It's a long drive along the length of Hvar to Sucuraj, on a fairly poor road, so you need to allow plenty of time.
Last summer the fare was 10KN per person and 70kn for the car.

I don't know for sure if this is the prison tower, but it looks nice and durable. The whole palace with it's walls and the main cathedral tower looks impressice.

If you want to do some excursions in Split, you could hike up to Marjan Hill.
You can see trails through the forest, some old chapels & the local zoo.
Go up to Marjan Hill for amazing scenic view of the city, its port and surroundings.

About halfway up Marmontova ulica (street), you'll find the local fish market. When I was there in the morning, the place was really bustling with locals checking out the day's fresh catch. After the market winds down in the afternoon, the area is hosed down, but don't expect the smell to go away. PEEEEYUUUU!
Of course, the nearby sulphur baths don't help much!
Intercity buses are also a good option to and from Split. The inter city bus station is located next to the ferry and train terminals down by the water. The bus network is the most extensive and complete transportation option, and it's possible to reach just about every conceivable destination in Croatia from here. I went to the information counter and got a paper schedule that shows the departure (polasci) and arrival (dolasci) times to and from all the possible destinations.
There is also a Suburban Bus Station for closer journeys located about a ten minute walk from the Old Town north on Domovinkskog Rata.
Get fresh seafood right next door at this restaurant. They have a limited menu and only carry seafood items to eat because it is supported by the market right there. The fried squid was good, and at $8 was reasonable price. Octopus salad was $12 and was okay, but now the tentacles can be chewy regardless of how they are cooked. Large draft pivo/beer was $3; good value for that. French fries-pomme frites were $3, another okay value.
