Stari Varoš
by croisbeauty
Stari Varoš is the oldest part of the town which lies in between Trg Republike and Marjan hill. It is a network of short and narrow streets whit small, mostly one-storey, stone houses. This part of the town used to be, and still is, inhabited by fishermen and labourers, who are the good soul of the city. To me, Stari Varoš represents what the town of Split realy is, a place full of lustiness, burlesque, great sense of humour, serenity, but also, invidiousness and belittling towards others.
Blocks of flats
by yumyum
Opposite the Poljud football stadium you will find lots of giant blocks of flats that date back to socialist Yugoslavia. There are hardly any shops there and the buildings are pretty depressing. We walked through them on our way back from the stadium to the old town. In these building lots and lots of Torcida people live. They are the original fans and supporters of the Hajduk football club.
Zagreb - Split highway
by tpk2
Best way of getting to Split from Zagreb is to use the new A1 motorway (opened June 2005). Driving 375 km kms takes around 3 - 3,5 hours on this very good motorway, compared with more than 7 hours needed if the old road is used. The road toll for a car/motorcycle is around 160 kunas.
By Sea...
by coceng
Jadrolinija (Tel : 355 399), in the large ferry terminal opposite the bus station; handles the coastal ferry line to Hvar Island.
The local car ferry is cheaper. 28 Kn & 1 1/2 hours.
The car ferries & passenger lines leave from separate docks.
The passenger lines leave at Obala Lazareta & the car ferries at Sv Petra.
In summer, it's wise to book first.
Croatia (Don't go)

LEAVE !
I've traveled all around the world, and this place is a waste of time, if you're there more than two days.
1. It's expensive! Very expensive for what you get. This is definately a third world Country, but they charge first world prices. $50 a day for a hire care, $4 for a bottle of beer, $25 for a fish dinner, not including drink. Taxi's are outrageously expensive. Hotel rooms are at least $100 a day for, American standards, a two star hotel.
2. Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Split... I stayed in all three cities. The people are NOT friendly. The men are as mentally rigid and dumb as they come. It's like they have a cinder block for a head. The women can be beautiful, but they are not interested in foreign men, not friendly or polite.
3. I was diving on the so called "Reefs" North of Split in a town called Omis, the reef was ugly and lifeless. The diving is crap.
4. The beaches are ok, European standard gravel for sand beaches, but not even close to the quality of the beaches in the
Caribbean. Again, the restaurants on the beachs are very expensive.
4. The night life is totally boring, with unfriendly people standing around just gawking at one another.
I will not go back. There are many other places in the world which have nice people, and are inexpensive. Croatia is a waste of time unless you are Croatian and live there... and then I just feel sorry for you.
