"The most comfortable beds in Split"

That's how the latest edition of a major guidebook describes this B&B - and they could well be right.

A lovingly restored and beautifully apponted house in Veli Varos has become the superb Zephyrus B&B. A glowing report here on VT sent me checking their website and making a booking - and everything both the review and their publicity promised was delivered. From the moment we stepped inside the door to a warm welcome from the Australian manager running the place to the moment we said goodbye at the airport we just loved everything about it.

Stylish, spotless and well fitted rooms with everything needed for a relaxed and comfortable stay were just the beginning. With a sunny courtyard , access on to two streets for easy coming and going and rooftop views of the old houses all around, no more than 5 minutes walk from the busy Riva and yet quiet and peaceful in itself, it was just what we wanted and, having become regular visitors to Split, we'll certainly be staying again.

Since writing that, we've returned to Zephyrus - in May 2011. Apart from breakfast now being a D-I-Y affair and a change of manager (the tip is edited to reflect those changes), Zephyrus is still as lovely as we first found it - and the friends who have stayed there on our recommendation in the interim all say the same.

Unique Quality: As well as three individual double rooms, each with its own lovely bathroom , Zephyrus has a two bedroom flat with a kitchen available for anyone wanting to self-cater. Breakfast is not served but the fridge in our room was stocked with yoghurt, milk and a flagon of orange juice and breakfast cereals were in the cupboard along with tea or coffee for you to prepare in your own time. You're welcome to take these in the courtyard, out on the small balcony or in your room. There is no parking directly attached to the house - but it is available not too far away.

Transport to and from the airport can be arranged with the managers, at a rate that is comparable to taking a taxi. The bus station and port are a 15 minute downhill walk away. Yacht charters and day tours can be arranged.

Zephyrus certainly isn't the cheapest option in town but in terms of comfort, location and amenities it is excellent value for money.

Luxury apartments in the old town

We chose the Zephyrus as we wanted two rooms; it turned out to be a fantastic alternative to two single hotel rooms as the two-bedroom apartment we booked was both stylish and homely with plenty of interesting touches. Like having your own home in Split.

The flat was airy and spacious with all the conveniences you might expect, including flat screen TV with many Croatian and foreign channels, fully equipped kitchen and comfortable beds and sofas. Some staple food is provided, such as orange juice and cereal, and fresh bread arrives from the nearby bakery each morning. A one-bed flat is also available.

We found the owners - who live upstairs - to be friendly and helpful, with plenty of tips on the city and how to get around. They arranged transport to the airport for us and also have a yacht that can be chartered for the day, although we didn't do this. I would love to do this if I return to Split.

The apartments are in the middle of the old town, less than five minutes away from the Riva and Diocletian's Palace, and only a few minutes from the Marjan Peninsula. The area is safe, mainly residential with some useful shops, as well as being interesting to explore in its own right.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Zephyrus for its comfort and convenience, and although it is dearer than many of the hotels in Split it represents very good value for money.

Unique Quality: The two-bedroom apartment has a large terrace with barbecue and table for six. Views are over the roofs of the old town, intimate enough to hear and see the locals going about their business and relaxing on their own balconies.
