Driving in and out of Split from Trogir.

by jamccann

Does anyone know where to park near the center of Split? We will have a car and would prefer to drive rather than hassle with public transit. We will be in Split 15/09 to 19/09.

As you arrive from Trogir there's one huge parking place just at the end of Domovinskog rata street - entrance from Vukovarska street. It's southern end is very close to the center.
There's also one parking just in front of the south facade of the Diocletian's Palace, but this one tends to be occupied and is more expensive (8kn/hour, compared to usual 3kn/hour).

Or simply park wherever you see the empty place. Sometimes it's hard but not impossible.

In May, we tried the parking Niksa points out, it was fully occupied (Wednesday or Thursday, smth around noon). May be it was an accident (we already agreed that my whole trip was a collection of accidents :) ), may be not. Anyway, I would agree that you should take the first available place at a reasonable distance. If you do not mind 15 minutes walk, there is a lot of space on Ivana Mestrovica, West of the center (parking there is free). It also a good option if you want to visit Mestrovic Gallery (which I always recommend).

Don't worry too much about parking. Should be quite easy to get a lot. There wasn't any problem for me when I was there. Parking is the least headache.

Have fun.

The Gate Entries

There is the land side gate called Kopnena Vrata is the main entry since Venetian control in the 15th century. It has a statue of St. John on the top portion, as well as a stone carving of the Venetian lion symbol underneath it. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and even back then had a draw bridge over the moat/canal.

Trogir

Beautiful city by the sea, with rich history (Trogir is on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites) and lovely sightseeing points. Trogir is a city that is partly situated on a little island, and that is the historical core of the city. The little bridge shown on the photo on the left is the way to get across and in 2006 a new little wooden bridge is opened. Photos of the little wooden bridge and the views from it you can see in the travelogues.
The best view of Trogir's riva, the seafront, is from the Tower Kamerlengo, which you can also see in the travelogues.
