Garden Apartments: Great family owned cottages

by zambeziqueen

We stayed at Garden Apartments for 1 night after arriving in the evening in Split. We were warmly welcomed by Nicola's parents who despite limited English were very kind and helpful. We had arrived without any Euros and had not been able to exchange/ draw any Kuna so we were facing an evening with no cash and therefor no dinner. They very kindly helped us out and advised us on a great restaurant just down the hill, which was our best seafood meal in the 2 weeks we spent in Croatia. Later that night Nicola helped my parents park their rental car (they arrived even later than us!) and the next morning helped us get around town to get to the ferry.

We were in a 3 bed 1 room apartment and my parents and sister stayed in a 2 + 1 room, both were very comfortable with clean kitchen and bathroom.

We were rather sad that we could not spend longer and would whole heartedly recommend it to other people.

We found directions very easy to follow from the airport bus drop off point. we trundled our wheelie bags along and were quickly there but my parents battled with the directions for driving and luckily stumbled across us walking back after our wonderful meal. it is near the hotel Marjan but up the hill up some steps. what caused confusion was all the other signs for the Marjan proper that they were following. the other confusion was that the sign outside the gate did not say garden apartments but another name.

wonderful warm welcome
Charming accommodation and clean facilities
Easy access to Riva (promenade) of Split

Porta Antica: Honeymooners in Tears

by asprag127

I would like to take a few minutes to discuss my experience with Porta Antica. My husband and I traveled to Croatia to celebrate our honeymoon in July 2009. We spent a lot of time researching locations and places to stay in Rovinj. My husband and I decided to "splurge," or spend more money then we usually do for our stay in Rovinj. We specifically chose Porta Antica because it was located on the small peninsula and it had sea front views.

When we arrived on July 7, 2009, we located Porta Antica as seen on the Internet and as advertised in our Rick Steve's travel guide. My husband and I were both very excited about our stay at Porta Antica. Then, much to our surprise, we were escorted off the peninsula area and into another building that did not have sea front views. I later learned that this was La Carera and not Porta Antica.

The hallway leading to the stairwell, had a nauseating odor from the trash bins, and we had to plug our noses and run for the stairs every time we accessed our room. The second morning of our stay I took a cold shower, and had to use my personal tissues as we had run out of toilet paper, and the apartments do not get serviced. By the time we checked out, I was absolutely in tears, and could not believe that we had paid 100 Euros a night for a room that I would barely pay 50 Euros for.

When we checked out, we discussed our displeasure with the Porta Antica clerk. Since this was not the owner, I waited until we returned from our trip to get the issue resolved. I was told in an e-mail that there was nothing they could do because I did not discuss the issues when we were there.

I feel like we were completely mislead as I had specifically requested a room in Porta Antica and not La Carera. I did review their website when I returned home, and there is a lot of writing in small print about how they can change rooms/locations without notice.

Based on our experiences, I would definitely NOT recommend reserving a room with Porta Antica.

Ragusa B&B at Zemanjina St. 12: Dubrovnik's B&B

by azemina

Three of us booked an apartment for our weekend stay at Ragusa B&B in May 2009. The owner was very responsive and sent an email, suggested a nice apartment with two bedrooms (4 beds), balcony, separate living room, 2 WC, kitchen and TV/SAT at 90 EUR/day. We confirmed and arrived as scheduled. The house is placed in the steep sideway street, some 50 stairs up from the main pedestrian zone in the Old town. We walked into the hallway so narrow and steep, and climb 65 stairs to reach the top two rooms. The rooms were connected with a tiny 10 sq feet front area, where the stove and fridge were squeezed in. Each room had a WC. And that was it. We didn’t get what we paid for. We did discover, however, that an apartment No 10 was the one we booked and paid for and it was vacant. We complained to an owner the next day, and she said apartment 10 had some problems with water supply (?!) so she had to move us elsewhere (?!). Something she forgot to mention. She also said the price for the two rooms we’ve got was the same as for the apartment, so no money return/price adjustment. Icing on a cake was when she said she will give us a discount next time we visit (?!).

We will never go back to Ragusa B&B at Zamanjina Street again.

Besides, the hallway has a strange stench, and we found it very nauseating every time we had to leave the room.

I found a jar of jam covered with mold on a breakfast table.

Cosmos: Lapad Area Hotels

by lifepro

Lapad area is about 15 minutes from dubrovnik by bus and there is a bus every 10-15 minutes. Hence I recommend Lapad area hotels. But 3 star hotel I stayed , probably like others was not something to write home about ! If you go to breakfast buffet towards the end of the meal time, chances are you may not find some dishes as they do not replace all.
There is no service for the luggage.

Little Vinisce: Great Appartments

by sdunstan

Although we booked late, Carol and Paul were very accomodating and made us most welcome. We stayed in a house 20 m from the sea, it was great for us as a family with a little one, we will definately go back.

Quiet Area with place foe little ones to run around safely, 20 me from the sea and a peable beach.

Villa Melita - Rovinj: Great Appartments

by sdunstan

This was a great place to stay, we were impressed by the standard, and even though we did not have breakfast there this can be provided. This will be a great place to stay for a large group as they have a great central meeting place with barbeque and pizza oven to use.

Hotel Histeria: Nice, clean and friendly

by PowerJ

The people at this hotel are hard working and friendly. The service is very good overall. There are plenty of English speaking people to help you find what you are looking for as far as tourist activities. The rooms have air conditioning that work ok but won't freeze you out by any means. Parking can be a little tight, but we always found a spot. The breakfast buffet is very adequate and clean.

The views around the hotel are very scenic. Very relaxing atmosphere.

Hotel Porat: Croatia/Bosnia's best budget hotel

by Chicd

If you ever feel like visiting Croatia or Bosnia, I want to recommend an amazing place to stay. It is a hotel called Hotel Porat situated in the town of Neum which is in the Bosnian corridor between the two sides of Croatia. This hotel is fantastic! It's owned and run by a young entreprenuer called Theo where he and his staff will treat you like royalty for a really reasonable price. For about £17/$30/20 euros each you get a beautiful (and very clean) ensuite room with a balcony. They have a terrace restaurant overlooking the sea and a private beach to the clear blue sea. The food in their restaurant is fabulous - all locally caught fish and seafood for example, and the service is outstanding. The best thing is that the hotel is ideally positioned for day trips to all the major cities and islands in the area - Dubrovnik, Split, Mostar, Sarajevo, Krk and Korcula, for example, and the hotel can organsise excursions for you.

Private beach. Balconies and terrace restaurant overlooking the sea and local islands provinding a stunning backdrop to your meal. The staff are so friendly and accommodating about everything, working their socks off all day and night so that you will have a pleasant stay.
