Opatija to Ljubljana by train?

by Graycatbird

Please tell me the schedule for the train from Opatija to Ljubljana. I would like to leave Opatija in early afternoon. I will turn in a car at Hotel Istra. Is that an easy walking distance to the train station. Many thanks.

I think you'll have to catch the train from nearby Rijeka.

There is no train station in Opatija. It is some 4-5 km above Opatija in the town Matulji, it only bears the name Opatija -Matulji, so you should take a taxi from Opatija to Matulji it is cheap.
There is train to Ljubljana several times a day , no problem for booking, you can do it in some agency when you are there.
Yes, you can go from Rijeka, but in Matulji is a lovely little train station, you must see it.

I agree with previous posts - it is either Rijeka or Matulji.
You can find timetables online at www.hznet.hr or www.bahn.de.

I agree with advice given and also check the bus as it may be a short journey time

Opatija to Ljubljana

by crzn

It appears the best place to drop our rental car is at the Hotel Istra on Marsala Tita in Opatija. We then need to get to the Rijeka train station for a 12:58 train to Ljubljana. Any information about the bus to the train station, how often do they run, how much time do I need to allow and is it easy to reconise the train station. Or other suggestion to get to Ljubljana are welcome. Thanks, you guys are great.. John & Robin

I live in Zagreb and I cant give detailed answer, but I know that Opatia is very near Rijeka and there are local lines to Rijeka very often. Informations on Bus ststion in Opatia. Bus ststion in Rijeka is very close to train station.
Good luck!

Use local bus on line #32 that runs between Lovran, Opatija and Rijeka every 20-30 minutes. The ride to Rijeka lasts approx. 30 minutes. The train station will be on the right-hand side of the bus - the best is to ask someone (the driver?). The station looks like any other Austro-Hungarian train station so it is hard to miss it :)
Bus timetable is here:

Better and fastest option is to take a taxi from Opatija to Matulji and there catch a train from Rijeka to Ljubljana.I paid 30 kunas for the taxi and it took about 10 minutes. No need to go to Rijeka.

Tanja, thanks for the great advise to take a cab from Opatija to Matulji train station for the train to Ljubljana. Sometimes the most simple solutions seem to evade us. Are the local Cabs easy to locate and simple and honest to take for an english only mongolot? Should we phone a cab or ??? Thanks, John & Robin

Travel Tips for Opatija

GEOGRAFICAL LOCATION

by novsco61

Thanks to its location below Ucka, the climate is gentle with enough moister, and that is why Opatija is famous of rich vegetation and its parks. The bathing season lasts from June to the end of September, and winters are gentle. That makes the rest in Opatija pleasant through the whole year.

Stroll with Style

by lauriejeanne

Rather than walk along the busy sidewalks, you may chooseto stroll along the beachside Promenade, a beautiful cobblestone walkway that extends from Opatija on to Icici and Lovran. You can walk the whole way along the sea side. It's lovely! By far my fondest memory of this region was the paople. I was greeted with warmth and treated well whereever I went. I made new friends with whom I am stil in contact and I do so look forward to going back there again soon!

OPATIJA COAT OF ARMS

by novsco61

The coat of arms of Opatija pictures a white seagull with red beak and claws standing on top of a white tower on a cliff in blue field with blue and white waves in base. All is bordered in gold and with a golden ribbon bearing the city name in black below.

NAME OPATIJA COMES FROM ...

by novsco61

Opatija derives its name from from the old Benedictine abbey of St. James (Sveti Jakov)(opatija=abbey) an old chapel reconstructed in 1774 and expanded in 1937.
In Italian it is called Abbazia.

“Old dame”, “Pearl of the Adriatic”, “Queen of Tourism” ,'Nica of Adriatic' - few more names for Opatija.

This is Adriatic

by croisbeauty

Yes, this is Adriatic the most beautiful and cleanest sea in the Mediterranean area. Since I am Croat you may considere me too subjective, however, this is not my opinion only. Most of my friends from abroad are the very same opinion too. The seashore of Adriatic offers numerous beaches where you can be all alone. This one is situated in the vicinity of the hotel Kvarner.
