    Lodge in Style!

This is what I call style! Opatija was the last stop of our holiday and I just didn't feel like pitching up the tent again. And if do I stay in a hotel, I want it to be special.
The Hotel Kvarner definitely is: Turn of the century decadence, but slightly frayed around the edges ("lacking it's former grandeur" as someone said, but I like the melancholy of it): The ceilings of the dining-room (the former ballroom) are15 m high decorated with stucco and enormous chandeliers. You feel like Austo-Hungarian monarchy! And indeed, Istria must have been the summer resort in the late 19th century and the Kvarner was the first Croatian hotel on the Adriatic coast to cater for these elaborate guests.
Staff were very friendly apart from one person that gave out to us in a very rude manner for parking on the hotel car park, even though we stayed in the annex, the 'Villa Amalia', where there were no parking spots left. I wasn't impressed at that! Parking is a big problem!

It's not cheap, but to my surprise the price for a room in the Villa Amalia (without the sea-view, but we didn't stay in the room much) wasn't much more than we'd paid in a horrid private B without B near Dubrovnik (do I smell a rip-off?), so I was well pleased.
I'd really recommend it, just to round off a trip with a bit of old-world charm and luxury.

Unique Quality: There's a small pool with palm trees and a bathing-place (steps into the water, no beach, but crystal-clear water. Go for an early-morning swim, it's magic). The indoor-pool didn't look so great, but we didn't use it anyway.
There's a large terrace where you can sit and enjoy the view.
The breakfast-buffet is lovely - cheeses and fruit, pan-cakes and sausages, eggs, jam, you name it, it's there.

Directions: just off the main street. Coming from Rijeka turn left towards the centre, follow the street. It's on the left hand side before you get to the promenade. From the street, you can see the entrance sign, but not the hotel itself.

Grand Hotel Kvarner is Opatija's most gracious hotel. It is renovated and offers all the comforts of this century living while keeping the charm of by-gone-days. Built in 1884, it is located just steps from the botanical garden, directly by the sea.

It is former residence of European Royalties and is built in neoclassical style.

    Unique Quality:
I've got really good room - with a sea view,
spacious, wit fridge and big terrace.
The food at dinner was good, at breakfast everyday the same.
The staff was very friendly, especially in restaurant.

I was only dissapointed with the pool . No renovation there, very small. My daughter even got allergy all over the face.

    Hotel accomodation

I stayed there only once and was somewhat disappointed. This hotel is one of the best-known landmarks of Opatija and host to many famous events such as Miss Croatia Pageant or Cro Music Awards. Therefore I got the impression it was something special. Well, soon I learned there were several much better, more grandiose hotels.
The best thing about this hotel is their restaurant terrace - big, sunny, amazing view of the sea.
