The big advantage of pre - booking is that it saves a lot of time at check in plus you are not worrying about there being sufficient availability. Also they ferry company keep you up to date with any problems such as high seas or cancellations if you have pre booked. I think they will still take you by road if you have pre booked and the service is cancelled, but not if you just turn up. It is a couple of years since I last did that crossing (September) and the boat was nearly full of day trippers from Croatia visiting Venice.

Travel Tips for Porec

The town walls and the walking path

by croisbeauty

Take a look at the other side of Porec peninsula and enjoy in walking on paved promenade which goes all around the old core of the town.
The small peninsula where today lies the heart of the old core of the town, was most probably inhabited as far back at the Neolithic.
The old core of the town is marked by the city walls, or what was left of it during the centuries. The part of the town, which is outside the city walls is called "Fora le porte" by the locals.

Information Center is by the Parking Lot

by BruceDunning

There is an office for information right next to the parking lot, along with the WC for your pleasure. There are indications that the information center is on Zagrebacka, but we did not see it there.

BAREDINE CAVE (Grotta Baredine)

by Anita_Porec

The legend of Baredine:

a Poreè nobleman named Gabriel fell in love with a beautiful milkmaid from Nova Vas called Milka. Gabriel's mother tried, in every way, to diminish his love for her, but she couldn't, so she gave 3 gold pieces to highway robbers to secretly kill Milka. The robbers didn't kill the milkmaid but instead threw her into the cave. When Gabriel found out of his love's ill fortune, he got on a horse and disappeared. Only his horse was found but near another cave. The story has it that the stone body of the milkmaid is slowly skidding, from century to century, down to the bottom of the cave where we can see it now as it is seeking her lover. Today's cavers claim that one could pass through to the next cave by digging. So as our legend has it, we can assume that one day the bodies of our Romeo and Juliet will meet in the underworld and stay together forever.

Eufrazijeva bazilika

by JLBG

The second photo shows the Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in Eufrazijeva bazilika, which has been inscribed by the UNESCO in 1997 on the world heritage list with the following comment :

''The group of religious monuments in Poreč, where Christianity was established as early as the 4th century, constitutes the most complete surviving complex of its type. The basilica, atrium, baptistery and episcopal palace are outstanding examples of religious architecture, while the basilica itself combines classical and Byzantine elements in an exceptional manner.''

The third photo shows the mosaic on top of the entrance. It represents an enthroned Christ. The golden background will be found in most of the mosaics of the Euphrasian basilica complex. Together with the famous fish, this mosaic is a kind of identification mark of Poreč.

The fourth photo shows the entrance from the inside. It is not as impressive as it was from the outside : the purpose was to get citizens INTO the basilica, while this is what you will see when leaving the complex, then why to decorate it ! However, there is much more to discover inside.
