Landing at Pula Airport
by EddieStewart
Hi There,
After the great response to my previous post i thought i would try another query.
We will be landing on Pula Airport on a Sunday night (9.00pm approx) and i was wondering if the best way to get to Porec is by Taxi?
ALso, ariving at that time i dont know if i can get some local currency to pay for this. Can i use Euros.

Taxi might be very expensive, especially in that hour. Check at the airport on arriving, there must be trasnfer to Porec by the bus. If not, You wont have problem to pay in euros but I suggest u to negotiate for the price first, could be more cheaper to sleep in hotel Riviera over night and taking local bus to Porec next day in the morning.

There is no bus service so a taxi is an option. A better deal may be a hire car for a few days.

SEE HOW STRANGE THE BORDERS OF CROATIA......
by eden_teuling
These two-in-one little maps show you how Croatia is situated the Europ and in the Istria one you can see where Porec is situated: a most wonderful, enjoyable corner!
This part of Croatia almost looks like a CORNUCOPIA (upside down) and indeed it really is.
There is such an abundance of natural and historical beauty, so much evidence of former cultures such as VENETIAN times that it is not only the great beaches but also the hinterland that make it so worthwhile visiting!
It was a real joy to cross from north to south and from mid-east to mid-west!
Comfortable in our own car, stopping time and again for a photo, a drink, a tour through the little towns and villages we "met"......I felt happy.....sun high above us, deep-blue skies and such friendly people! My fondest memory? Oh, always that same question and what more can I answer (after ample thinking) than: all of it......feeling, seeing, hearing, admiring.........taking it in, every little bit of it while roaming around......

The Pentagonal tower (Peterokutna Kuċa)
by JLBG
The Pentagonal tower (Peterokutna Kuċa) was built in 1447 by Niccolo Lion as a defense tower for the city walls, which were dismantled at the very beginning of the 19th (when Napoleon ruled Istria ?)
Is it really pentagonal ? At first sight (first photo), it does not seem to be !
However, even if it looks square from the Decumanus, the Pentagonal Tower is actually pentagonal from the rear ! I have checked because I was puzzled about it ! So the so Pentagonal Tower IS definitely pentagonal ! (second photo)
High on the Pentagonal tower, a cartouche with a winged lion is engraved in the front wall (third photo). It is another testimony of the presence of Venice in Poreč. Underneath, the letters N U flank a smaller cartouche with another winged lion. What N U stands for, I have not found anywhere.
The fourth photo is a close up on the lion holding an open book, meaning "peace" while when it holds a sword, it means "war".
Ancient palaces, now official offices !
by JLBG
The imposing building on the first photo is unidentified. It looks like a theater and I hope that some one will give me the answer ! On top, a woman between two angels holds a cellular ! No, that cannot be ! It should be one of the seven muses playing music (what was her name ? Isn't that Terpsichore the muse of dancing?)
The second photo obviously shows an official building. I would bet it is the harbor authority.
Sveti Lovrec
by croisbeauty
Sv. Lovrec (Pazenaticki) is a semi-urban settlement located to the southeast of Porec. It is difficult to say precisely how old is this settlement, because traces of Christianity date back to the 3rd century, and its name is derived from the cemetery church of St. Lawrence of the 8th century.
Once called Sanctus Laurentius de Pasenatico, recognized the Venetian government in the second half of the 13th century.
Visit the cathedral

Funny how I am not this religious but when I am travelling, I am curious at how other cultures and countries live and this includes visiting their churches. I am interested at ancient art and at the peaceful atmosphere I can find in these churches. Unfortunately I was denied entrance in this one for unsuitable dress. I was wearing bike shorts.
