''Marunada'' chestnut festival
Marun is a special rare sort of chestnut that can be found only in this part of Croatia, between Ika and Moscenicka Draga. Otherwise, marun can only be found in some locations in Italy and Spain.
Since 1973 each year a festival is held in honour to this sweet chestnut. It starts somwhere in the middle of octobre, when maruni are ripe. It's a gasronomic and cultural event. Main dishes are cakes and sweets made with maruni. My favourite is a cake in a form of a heart made out of maruni puree and covered with chockolade sauce. You can also try Chestnut blossom Honey brandy. Every restaurant and cafe has a rich selection of cakes.
The visitors are kept entertained by entertainment program: famous Lovran Wind Orchestra music, folk and music ensembles from Istria and Kvarner, animators, prize competition, exhibitions... You can participate in picking up chestnuts, lectures about their healing characteristics, and taste traditionally prepared delicacies of nature - numeral food and sweetmeat of Lovran chestnuts.
