I'm travelling to Rijeka for the first time next March. I need to return to Italy and wondered whether anyone could advise on a cruise/boat travel that goes from Rijeka to Venice or other parts of Italy that would be worth doing? (I'd like to see some of the Croation coastline rather than just go back to Italy by train or bus.)
Also - how long would you recommend staying in Rijeka? is there much to do from a tourist perspective?
I think you could stay in Rijeka a couple of days. There isn't much to see there.
There are daily buses from Rijeka to Trieste; in Italy. Have a look at www.autostazione trieste.it for info and timetables. Trieste is a beautiful city you could spend a couple of days there too.
From Trieste you can take a train to Venice and to other towns or cities in Italy. See; www. trenitalia.com
There is a Ferry that goes from Rijeka south along the Dalmatian coast stopping at Split and Dubrovnik. This ferry then goes to Bari, Italy from Dubrovnik. They also run ferries to Ancona, Italy from Zadar and Split. The same company, Jadrolinjia also runs various ferries and Hydrofoils to the islands of the coast from the ports on the coast.
Service in March is "off season" not as much service as in the summer

Another Company runs ferries form Venice to several ports in Istria, From Acona and from Pescara to Split, Zadar etc. Again service may be limited in March.

While Rijeka is more of a transit point than a tourist destination, it does date back to Roman times. Their are no hordes of tourists. Two days would be plenty.
Ferries are as advised above and i suggest you stay outside Rijeka city, maybe Volosko or Lovran which are on the beautiful Lungo Mare promenade.

The Rijeka Summer Nights festival offers a number of excellent plays and music events which are performed at various city venues. During the festival the squares and terraces of Rijeka become stages in the open, also a part of the program is being held in the abandoned factory halls.

It's not activity but part of Rijeka's tradition. NK Rijeka is football club , usually in top 3 in Croatia with crazy fans ARMADA ! Also, stadium is on special position with big rock over the field and next to sea. Amazing by nights to watch the game. Currently on 2nd position in Croatian league.
This 11 km promenade (called Lungo mare) from western part of Rijeka to Lovran via Volosko and Opatija is great way to relax and walk next to sea, old trees, old beautiful villas, specialy on sunny days. You can finish your walk in some Lovran or Opatija cafes and then go back to Rijeka with taxi or bus.

Ucka is beautiful mountain near Rijeka (main photo was taken from my balcony) with highest peak Vojak (1401 m - second photo)
Part of the mountain is beautiful nature park with lots of possible activites you can be involved: mountain climbing, trekking, free climbing, paragliding and hang-gliding, mountain biking.
Ucka is nature border between Istra region and Kvarner region. You can reach top with car as well. On a clear day, view is amazing, you can see biggest Croatian islands (third photo) or beautiful Istra region from other side of mountain (fourth photo - not that good). Also, it's always better to go up after rain or north wind, you'll fill in your lungs better. Hike pats are very well designated so probably you cannot be lost. You can find some good restaurants on the way to top. Last photo was taken from Rijeka's port.
