constant changes
by willy_wonka
every time i return to zagreb, it has changed more and more. i was most shocked on my last visit to see these beautiful new flashy glass buildings, which literally feel like they have sprung up from nowhere! as croatia continues to grow economically and touristically, i am sure that more changes like this will occur. whether you love it or hate it, its inevitable that zagreb, and croatia on the whole, is getting busier and busier. every time i return there are new buildings, new 'hypermarkets', new freeways, new hotels etc etc etc.
when will it end? who knows. all i do know is that i cherish the zagreb, and croatia, from years ago. the quiet times, the less built up times. the less touristic times.
change is inevitable though....

This photo was taken by me, the inland view of Croatia... as we approaching the Dalmatia Coast ! It was taken from the night bus that I took from Zagreb the previous night, reaching the area in the following early morning...
This was also my first glimpse of what Dubrovnik could offer me ! More amazing views...
Zagreb, the capital of...
by Kamen_mali
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, developed from the medieval settlements of Kaptol and Gradec, and is located at the foot of the Medvednica mountain. In the second half of the 20th century, it crossed the river and became a metropolis.
Today, it seems that Zagreb consists of three towns in one: the Upper town – with the enchanting peace and quiet of past times; the Lower town (lively as the biggest European business centres) and New Zagreb – reminding one of a huge exhibition of contemporary architecture and urbanism.
All period of Zagreb’s history left traces in the architecture, in the sacral and secular monuments, and in the design of streets, squares and parks.

A bit about the historical background of the city
by polardabar
The old parts of Zagreb (Gornji Grad) have gotten the official proclamation which made it a Free Royal City in 1242 from King Bela IV. Nevertheless the Zagreb parish has existed since as far as 1094, but some say that the city itself is a lot older. It has been the capital of Croatia since 1557 which enabled it to save much of its medieval city.
The whole now-a-day center is practically the old city. When you go to the cathedral, there are towers around it that were a part of a big wall which separated two powerful cities at that time - Kaptol & Gradec.
During centuries Croatia was ruled by everyone from the Venetians, Osmans, Hungarians, Austrians & all those, which I believe one can sense in the mentality of the people. But we finally got our independence in 1991 - for a price though... During the war (1991-1994) Zagreb luckily didn't suffer as much as other Croatian cities (like Vukovar), so the recovery went pretty fast.
This is the Zagreb that I know.
