Ataturk memorial
by leics
Not really off-the-beaten-path but you may well wander past without taking heed. The memorial is on Kordon Boyu.
Kemal Ataturk, 'the great Turkish statesman who abhorred war' was honoured by the United Nations in 1978.
'An outstanding example of promoting the spirit of mutual understanding between peoples and lasting peace throughout the world'.
'An exceptional reformer in all fields coming within Unesco's competence'.
A sign near the memorial gives more details in Turkish and English.
A good man.
Vist St Hilarion
by leics
St Hilarion is a superbly decrepit Byzantine/Crusader castle perched high above Kyrenia, with stunning views in all directions.
It is an absolute must-see. I have written about it in much more detail on my St Hilarion page, so please click to see why you should visit.
How to get there? Take a turn (signed) off the Kyrenia>Nicosia main road. Don't try to walk there.......the castle access passes through a military area and it's really ont a good idea to wander around. Indeed, you may find the road is closed for a while when shooting practice takes place (on the old jousting grounds). Don't stop on the way in your car either.....park in the castle parking area.
You'll need to hire a car, or a taxi, or take a tour from Kyrenia itself.
Whichever way you get there, make sure that you do.
Kyrenia

"Just there for a few hours"
We went into the northern part of cyprus on a tour from southern cyprus.
As we were there only a few hours, we visited the castle and a short walk around the harbour.
The castle visit was good and we saw the remains of the ship wreck found on the coast. You can visit the dungeons with a few grafic displays of torture. The castle is still good condition.
The harbour as lots of bars and restaurants very picturest take your camera.
I would like to see more but time was no on side.
