Larnaca
by call_me_rhia
Larnaca is not really beautiful, but somehow it's much lower key than other southern beach cities... you can still see local people living there, and artisans working in their businesses... and in particular, there are local businesses that are not tourist-related. it doesn't sound like much - but go to Paphos and try to spot one... it won't be an easy task.
The city is possibly Cyprus oldest town - and the oldest ruins can be seen at the Kition excavations. The modern town, instead, is plit in two, metaforically: there's a small but older city center full of character, and a wide sprawl of uncharacteristic hotels and restaurants along the beach. Some of the sights in Larnaca are top class. In particular the tiny but truly amazing Church of St. Lazarus, built over and around the tomb of the biblical Lazarus.
Outside town the Larnaca Salt Lake is very scenic and picturesque, and nearby you can visit the
Hala Sultan Tekke which hoststhe tomb of Umm Haram, the foster mother of Mohammed.

1 suitcase & 1 piece of hang luggage. For 2 weeks I take 4 tee-shirts, 2 smartish shirts, 3 pairs daytime shorts, 2 pairs smart/evening shorts, 1 pair lightweight lilen trousers, 1 pair trainers, 1 pair sandals, 1 pair flip-flops, hat, 4 pairs knicks, 2 pairs socks. Clothes can be washed in a sink/washbasin with travel wash and will dry quickly. Pack some washing line & pegs. Soap, shampoo, conditioner (definitely, sun wreaks havoc with hair!) deodourant, smelly, suntan lotion and aftersun (always use aftersun, otherwise your skin will dry out) Digital camera with enough available memory for up to 500 pictures. Beach towel. Radio, binoculars, multitool.
Aliki - Salt Lake
by travelthrough
The barren vegetation surrounding Cyprus´South - the towns of Larnaca and Limassol - has shaped two salt lakes. A Christian Orthodox legend has it that Saint Lazarus asked for grapes but was not given any by the locals on his way through the area. Thus, the vineyards were turned into a salt lake where nothing grew anymore.
The lake is especially nice for a stroll around and to visit the beautiful Hala Tekke Mosque. It is a very important place of pilgrimage for all Muslims and an architectural jewel. According to Islamic faith, the Prophet´s aunt died on this spot because she fell off a mule. Tourists can visit it as well.
Larnaca Salt Lake
by freya_heaven
Many places in Cyprus have legends & storys behind their making & importance. The Salt Lake at Larnaca is the same.
According to legend St Lazaros asked on old woman for food & drink, she refused claiming her vines had all dies. St Lazaros replied "may your vines be dry & be a salt lake for ever more". Hence a salt lake inland.
In reality the sea water penetrates the porous rock between the sea & lake area.
In the winter the lake is covered with pink flamingoes. When the lake dries up for the summer the flamingoes continue their migration.
