If walking around Limassol what to see?

by jurynaples

We are going to be in Limassol on a cruise next May for only @ 7 hrs. I had wanted to go to Troodos region to see painted churches but advised it's a holiday and price was ridiculous as well as time constraints. I've heard there might be some beautiful painted churches in Limassol to see but don't know the names of any. I see paintings on some real estate sites of churches supposedly in Limassol but can't get response to names. Thinking may not want to do museum/castle thing since we will be doing that in Greece, Italy, etc. Would love any thoughts on things to do if walking around Limassol - any Byzantine era paintings in small churches, etc.? If someone thinks there is something really worth seeing, please let me know. Not getting much help from Cyprus Tourism Office & guides are quoting me ridiculous prices like $600 USD for 4 hrs. of driving around, since it's a holiday. Any thoughts for walking/Limassol?

Hi,
Usually, if you are coming into Limassol by cruise ship, you will find they do offer onboard excursions to Omodos Village (about 45 minutes drive from the port). There is a fabulous monastery in the village itself and now some of the cloisters have been turned into exhibition rooms too. The village is very quaint, although it is now a tourist village but you will be able to see and purchase locally made honey, olive oil, soaps, lace, silver etc.

Other than that - you could take a taxi into Limassol Old Town and ask it to drop you by the Electricity main office, which is directly across from a very large orthodox church. From there you can wander along the pedestrianised shopping street (St Andrews Street) and just around the corner from the main post office building is the covered fruit and vegetable market.

A lot depends on the day and time you will be in Cyprus. If you arrive on Sunday, you may find a number of the shops on St Andrews St, covered market etc will be closed. The shops in Omodos village will still be open though.

Good luck

Hello,

If you are interested in nature, I suggest that you check www.natureofcyprus.org. In the naturespots section you can search for info related to distance from Limassol and kind of naturespot ..eg. trail, beach, dam, etc. I am afraid that public transport on the island is not great at the moment, but with a bit of preparation, maybe you can arrange to go to the mountains and come back on time. Besides the Unesco World Heritage painted churches, there are picturesque churches all around, and old stone architecture villages.
Ask me for more specific questions if you like.
Bye

Travel Tips for Limassol

Go to Lofou.

by planxty

As I mentioned in my Limassol homepage, I really only created this page as a vehicle to create a travelogue for Lofou. Hopefully, next trip to Cyprus, I can rectify the situation and present some proper Limassol tips.

In the meantime, I would ask you to have a look at my Lofou travelogue and decide for yourselves whether you want to visit.

You will need your own transport, either car or bike, as there is no public transport there. You could try hitching, but I wouldn't recommend it.

If you really want to see what old Cyprus was like, this is the place to do it.

To Kokkolakia (The bones)

by Judd about To Kokkolakia (The bones)

This is owned by a Cypriot-South African family, and the restaurant is decorated in an African safari theme with zebra, cheetah and antelope hides on the walll. In the spring, summer and fall, try to get a table in the outside garden patio with teh giraffes! My favorite here is the Boerwaars ring, South African sausages served with steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. They also have exotic menu items like ostrich.

KTD's Limassol Page

Limassol is probably the best place to stay in Southern Cypress if you wish to visit other parts of the Island as it is centrally positioned. It probably isn't the most picturesque as it seems to consist of one long road and thats about it. There is a small nice shopping area in the 'old' part of town. If you are looking for a more picturesque place to stay then I would recommend staying in Phaphos.
