hotels near Amathus Beach

by lounew

I am going to Paphos in Sep 09 for a wedding, the wedding party are staying at the Amathus Beach, although this is way out of our budget! our son will be 15 months old by the time we travel and so i'm trying to find a family friendly hotel as near to the Amathus Beach as possible to cut down on travelling. We are also looking for a good deal although i'm willing to search around pricewise. I'm just struggling to find hotels nearby at the minute!!!

Thanks for your help

Amathus Beach isn't really an area as such, it's a hotel. Basically, any hotel along Poseidon Avenue (the long beachside hotel 'drag' out of central Pafos harbour area, 'Poseidonos'in Greek)will be close enough to walk.

There are umpteen places to stay, from the massive purpose built 'resort' type (like the Amathus Beach) to the smaller type (like Pafos Gardens). Have a look here:

http://www.pafoshoteliers.com/

Just don't stay anywhere near the Tombs of the Kings, because that is on the other side of Pafos and a substantial walk (30 minutes+). You need to be on the eastern side of the harbour. Don't stay in Pafos town either: it's a bus ride away from the harbour area.

There's a zoomable map of Pafos here:

We stayed at the Paphos Gardens hotel complex a couple of years ago and it was fabulous. We stayed half-board and th efood was wonderful. The room was large with Air-con and a fridge (You could go self-catering as well)
It was located at the "far end" of Paphos towards the Amathus although stil a kilometer or so away i think.
Taxis are, I believe, fixed price around €5 within th eresort but best to check that that is still correct and applies to your hotel.
Amathus is described as being 2km from harbour.
A map of Paphos and other areas here : http://www.kypros-cyprus.com/maps/paphos.jpg
Paphos gardens are in square E7 - Amathus Paphos is in Square E9 - enlarge the picture if you need to see better.

Poseidon Avenue is flat, with good pavements, so it's an easy walk from the harbour area.

hiya

thanks for your quick reply, yes i realise that Amathus Beach is a hotel rather than an area, i didn't really make it that clear did i? Anyway i'll have a look and see what prices i can get. it's a real help knowing which areas are furthest away. It's so hard trying to find a decent price and manage to be in the place we need to be too! i wouldn't mind travelling although i think it might be a handful with a toddler! he's our first and i haven't even dared get on a bus locally never mind abroad!!!

thanks again for all your help

You'll be fine in Pafos: it's all more or less flat around the harbour area and very geared-up for tourists (especially Brits).

Just take the buggy and enjoy (be prepared for some 'riling' on the flight there and back though). :-)

Travel Tips for Paphos

Common Sense and Courtesy

by wkdblonde

The one thing I have learned as a young female in Pafos, is that the locals don't like English tourists. One look at barstreet and you can understand. Mainly the English are prancing about drunk, causing fights with each other, or the locals. Just because you paid to go there, does not make the place yours. Pafos people say they do not want to see Pafos turn into another Ayia Napa, and why should it. The local boys see many English girls as a stereotypical easy lay, apparantly we are the nation of teenage mums. So when leered at, yelled at, or whatever they say, reply politely, be pleasant. A friend and I had a run in with a man who we dismissed and he told us something I have always remembered "You're not in England anymore, I do what I want and people will be on my side." Just common sense and courtesy go a long way!

Midnight swims and falling stars

by wkdblonde

If you are willing to drive, find yourself around coral bay at night, with all the lights off away from the light pollution, of which Pafos has nothing compare to London, you can see the most amazing night sky. I have never seen so many falling stars in an evening.

If you are willing to swim in dark sea unknowing of whats underneath you, wait until 5am, or after a night in town! The harbour in Kato Pafos has a floating platform, friends and I swam to the float and watched the sun rise. It is breathtaking.

A Good Irish Bar

by mochaman340 about O'Neills

This is a great local place on Tomb of the Kings Road. Great atmospher, great bar tenders, (Ricky and Phil) with lots of SKY sports if you are a sports fan. This place is definitely worth a look. Wear whatever you like, its that casual.

Koh – I – Nor

by kayleigh06 about Koh – I – Nor

This place is really hard to find, as its off the main Posidonous Avenue. When actually in the restaurant (it was quite quiet when we was there) it is very good service and we found the menu to not be over-priced. The food was done really quickly, and you get a good meal out of it aswell. It is worth a try if you like you Indian food, and the food is excellent, so it is definatly worth finding if it sounds like something that would like to try.

Nice place, nice atmosphere.

by leics about Thomas's Jungle

Fairly small bar/ taverna, good food, friendly staff. A very pleasant place to eat, drink & spend time in of an evening. (Also bingo nights, but perhaps best to avoid those!) The Fisherman's special (basically a fish pie) was excellent.
